I think people should appreciate Gohan as he is

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 10:35 AM PST

I know this is not the most shared opinion but I have noticed a lot of people really dislike the evolution of Son Gohan after the Cell Saga, and even more in DBS. I have to disagree with them, though.

Gohan was never a fighter. He was always a kind child who was forced by the circumstances: Goku's death and the Saiyans coming, nobody else except Krilin and him being at hand for the Namek trip, and, yes, wanting to be prepared for these androids who were undoubtely going to come and who were so strong they killed everybody in an alternate timeline. But even when he was chosen as Earth's saviour by Goku, he didn't really had the instinct to kill Cell. He just wanted peace.

Considering that Dragon Ball is a 'shonen', you can expect a good potion of its playerbase taking power and fighting very seriously. But considering how many "fighting maniacs" the series has (Goku and Vegeta, but also Tenshinhan and, to a lesser extent, Piccolo) I find rather interesting Gohan's divergence.

It'd been so easy if Toriyama just turned Gohan into another Saiyan badass who gets power up after power up (well, not that he didn't in 'Z') and hogs the spotlight like crazy. Instead of that, Gohan became his own thing. He knows how to fight and he's even damn good at it. But he doesn't like violence. He doesn't have that huge desire of getting stronger for the sake of it. He wants to be a scholar. He wants to take care of his family. And when he trains before the Top; it's partially because he realizes that, even if he's never going to be Goku or Vegeta, his power may still be needed someday and he needs to be able to protect the people he loves.

But he isn't obsessed with fighting. He's a kind-hearted half human. He was never supposed to be a hardboiled badass, even if he showed glimpses of it when he turned SSJ2 and Mystic. Even 10 years after the Buu saga you can see that he doesn't give a damn about fighting. And that's fine. That makes him more unique and compelling, in my opinion, than being a slightly smarter Goku. Because he has actual motivations when he actually becomes stronger, and when he doesn't, it makes perfect sense. Other characters like Yamcha gave up because they were too outclassed, but in Gohan's case, it's just his nature. If he needs to, he will definitely fight as hard as anyone, but he is how he is.

Also, and more importantly, the value of a character isn't in his battle power.

Is Vegeta technically the most powerful (regular) Saiyan to have lived?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 07:42 PM PST

Excluding Broly as a regular Saiyan due to being the Saiyan of Legend, and while Goku is always a step ahead of Vegeta, he has gained many of his powers and boosts from techniques like Kaio-Ken, the SS God ritual or Ultra Instinct awakened after falling into the Spirit Bomb.

Vegeta on the other hand, has constantly kept up with Goku and their enemies through only sheer training and his force of will. After seeing his Ascended SS Blue form on par with Goku's SSB KKx20 and defeating Toppo, plus achieving the SS God form completely on his own, I think it feels right to give Vegeta that title, he's earned it.

What songs do people associate with the Dragon Ball that you didn’t expect?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 09:12 PM PST

Recently, I've been on a '90s jpop journey. My first real introduction to it years ago were the songs included in DBGT. Since those were ALL explicitly love songs in ways that DB never addressed the subject, they already feel far removed from Dragon Ball.

And yet, there seems to also be a lot of DB-related comments on a song that never appeared in DB at all. Namely, Nichiyoubi. It's the B-side of DEEN's single Hitori Janai. Just look at the comments. A few people paid their respects to Hiromi Tsuru on there.

    Just a random shower thought...

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 09:01 PM PST

I was bored, and thought of something crazy.

According to the Dragon Ball Wiki, Goku is biologically 43 years old and phisically 39 years old by the time of the Universe Survival Arc. Since Freeza destroyed Planet Vegeta around 30 years before he encountered Goku, that makes Freeza AT LEAST 30 years older than Goku. That makes the man 73 at the very least! And he was on par with SSB Goku during that epic fight scene in Super?! He's pretty old, but he definitely makes up for it in power!

What do yall think about this idea/theory?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 07:59 PM PST

Now, as we all know Baby Pan is ridiculously powerful. And some, maybe even the majority are thrown off by that.

But baby pan is always excited, so basically my idea is that she accesses her power tap from joy and excitement, contrasting her fathers power tap from anger. And as she ages, this power will calm.

Regardless, in an inevitable next series I can't wait to see Pan grown up and how they portray her power.

How awesome is this DBZ timeline where Goku & Vegeta's families are included?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 06:46 PM PST

For anyone willing to read, Ive written a cool alternate timeline.

I like creating more idealized alt history scenarios of various anime, so while working at Goodwill I've thought of one for DBZ. That expands the cast of heroes & makes things more how they should be.

So in short, my timeline consists of Bardock taking his family to Earth, the Z Fighters being larger & more organized like the MHA Hero Association, & Vegeta's parents being kept alive by Frieza. Also Vegeta's parents turn out to be the 1st to go SSJ in 1000 years, giving Vegeta a sense of pride. In the end, the Earth has 2 formidable groups protecting it, the Saiyan tribe & the Z Heroes.

Now for the long story for those that have the patience:

Bardock decides to take his family to Earth, knowing Frieza will destroy the planet & it will give them a chance for a new start. Raditz follows the call back to the planet too & is forced by Bardock to come with them. When Frieza arrives, he is still attacked by King Vegeta's elite forces, but knocks out the King with a tailwhip & vaporizes the squad with Queen Karin outside the room. He forces the injured king to wake up & witness the end of his planet. The Queen is arrested by Zarbon who then asks if he can kill them, Frieza says "no, I have a special treatment in mind for them, they're royalty after all".

Back on Earth, the Bardock family arrives near Grandpa Gohan's home, who then comes out to investigate the 3 crashes. Bardock initially rejects his offer for help until it rains. They stay with him till Bardock Gine & Raditz can finish building their own castle nearby. Kakarot still forms a bond with Gohan who takes care of him while the Saiyans are busy setting themselves up. Obv Gohan is never killed since they know about the Ozaru stuff.

Bulma still arrives years later for Gohan's dragonball, turns out he never told the Saiyans about the dragonballs. Bardock wants to use them to bring back Planet Vegeta & form a rebellion against Frieza so he, Raditz, & Kakarot set out with her. Needless to say, nothing they fight is a match, & for a while Bardock & Raditz develop a Saitama-complex, letting Kakarot do alot of the fighting since he can still get a challenge from it. Most of the Pilaf saga is skipped, but when the 1st wish comes around, Bardock wishes for the return of Planet Vegeta & the Saiyans killed "sorry but that wish cannot be granted", "then I wish for you to destroy Frieza" "sorry but that wish also cannot be granted, for Frieza is far beyond my power". Then Pilaf sneaks up & wishes to rule the world, which gets granted sort of, though his rule doesnt last long & the Saiyans can still go through his armies & remove him.

Skip to when King Piccolo is brought back & gathers the dragonballs. Bardock Raditz & Kakarot show up to confront him to their disappointment. He says if only he was younger he would be able to defeat them, arrogantly they allow him to make his wish for youth then he destroys the dragon, catching them off guard. He's still no match for Bardock or Raditz, but is able to give Kakarot a more even fight. Raditz or Bardock nearly kill him & he shoots out the Piccolo egg saying he hopes his offspring can be a better match for them. Kakarot says he looks forward to it.

By this time, many martial artists who've encountered & been humiliated by the Saiyans have been recruited by a new dojo. While Roshi & Shen were bitter rivals in the Canon, in this timeline they decide to put aside their differences & create a greater dojo to recruit & train humans against the Saiyans. It starts off as the Turtle-Crane school of martial arts.

Kid Piccolo is found by former-mercenary Tao (now helping out at the Turtle-Crane dojo) & recruited, so instead of living on his own, Piccolo is raised by the dojo.

In place of King Piccolo taking over the kingdom, a rebellious teenage Raditz becomes a temporary villain, as he is fed up with living at home & feels Saiyans are entitled to rule over humans. He easily goes through King Furry's forces & claims his throne. Some of the dojo's fighters show up to confront him (mostly Tien Yamcha & Krillin with some Red Ribbon survivors) but are obv no match. Eventually Bardock & Kakarot show up to confront him. He argues with them how Earthlings should be grateful they arent exterminating them & to go conquer their own kingdoms. Bardock makes Kakarot fight him to toughen him up, once Kakarot is too injured, Bardock puts an end to Raditz's reign. He apologizes to King Furry for his son & they have another Dragonball collecting adventure to bring back the soldiers Raditz killed.

This coup brought a new wave of support for the Turtle-Crane Dojo & Earthling nationalism, King Furry decides to start sponsoring it as a paramilitary dojo & donating his best troops to train at it, since it boosted Tien Yamcha & Krillin enough to fight Raditz for a min & survive. Capsule Corp also decides to sponsor it. I imagine the DB Evolution gi would be a fitting uniform for fighters of this grand dojo. With state & big tech funding, the Turtle-Crane Dojo begins to be more like the My Hero Association.

Skip to the timeskip & 3 Saiyan children are made. 1st Kakarot & Chichi still end up making Gohan, then Raditz has a daughter Ranch, then Bardock & Gine have a 3rd son they name Kato.

It is now early DBZ, Vegeta & Nappa land on Earth to see why Kakarot hasn't wiped out it's life. Their scouters take them right to Bardock & family. The Bardock family senses them & flies to them, meeting in a large battlefield. Vegeta & Nappa are shocked to see an entire family of Saiyans. Bardock tells them the long story about how he raised his family on earth & how Frieza wiped out their planet. Vegeta is in shock & needs to modify their plans. A squad from the Z Hero dojo arrives to investigate the high power levels. Vegeta says "This news does change everything, & I've waited patiently for any chance to destroy Frieza & his minions. But we still showed up for a fight. Tell you what, if you Earth Saiyans can best us in battle & prove yourselves worthy allies, we will join you, afterall Saiyans do get stronger from battle. & if your Earth friends there can defeat our Saibamen & prove they arent worthless trash, we will cancel our plans to wipe out Humans & allow them to join our little resistance. Saibamen! I want them alive, do your best but don't kill them.'"

Bardock is still the strongest Earth Saiyan & fights Vegeta, resembling Goku & Vegeta's 1st fight, except without Kaioken. Kakarot & Raditz fight Nappa but don't do well, & Gine decides to jump in & Nappa powers up, throwing them back. Meanwhile Piccolo, Tien, Yamcha, Krillin, Nam, Silver, Chappa, (boosted to around 500-800 p lvls) etc fight the Saibamen & struggle to defeat them. Gohan, Ranch, & Kato come later to see the battle, Gohan eventually gets upset seeing his father, uncle, & grandmother getting beat up by Nappa & headbutts him, giving him a parallel injury that Raditz originally got. "You little brat!!" Nappa yells swatting Gohan. Ranch & Kato try to intervene but Gine & Raditz order them to stay back. A Saibaman that Yamcha kicked out lands near Kakarot, presumed gone. As a beaten up Kakarot lunges for another attack, the Saibaman springs up, attaching itself to Kakarot, & explodes. Bardock sees this & goes into False Super Saiyan, beating the crap out of Vegeta & Nappa. As he throws Nappa in the air, about to blast him like Vegeta originally did, Gine stops him, telling him its not their fault & to please calm down. He goes back to normal & says "they killed our son & you want me to spare them?" "remember they ordered the Saibamen not to kill, it must have acted on its own". Nappa hits the ground & Bardock questions & Nappa confirms it was an accident. They head over to Kakarot who's body vanishes with Piccolo once again saying "this must be Kami's work, they must have a plan for him." Kami telepathically tells them that King Kai wants to train Kakarot & to wait a year before bringing him back. But it turns out the Frieza force overheard most of it on their scouters, finding out there is a family of strong Saiyans on Earth, & that Vegeta & Nappa have defected. Vegeta crawls over to his scouter, listens in on the Frieza agents, & hears that the Ginyu force is being sent to Earth & freaks out. King Kai talks to everyone for the 1st time, screaming that the Ginyu force really is coming to Earth & they have about a year to train.

I'll skip over most of the Ginyu saga for now but Piccolo ends up dying again, protecting Gohan from Recoome's blast. Kakarot comes back after being trained by King Kai while Bardock finally goes Super Saiyan to defeat Ginyu, Ginyu says something about a Super Saiyan before his line goes dead.

Thanks to the abundance of Saiyan space pods, Capsule Corp is able to build a taller version of the ship Goku used to go to Namek.

All the Saiyans & elite Z Fighters head off for Namek. On their way they sense a strange power on a desolate planet. They stop to see who it is, & come across the withered King Vegeta. As said above, Frieza had been keeping him & Queen Karin barely alive on a backwater planet & often abused them. Vegeta & his parents have a reunion & fill them in on the stories, & is introduced to his new little brother Tarble. Vegeta's family packs what little they have & board the ship.

Before coming onto the ship, King Vegeta reveals that he's had a secret ability for years & goes Super Saiyan, shocking everyone, then Karin & Tarble reveal they can do it too. Turns out that Frieza had set up his prisoners for the right conditions to go SSJ, but due to malnorishment & stuff, they kept it secret from him & only planned on using it when the time was right. So the 1st Super Saiyan in a thousand years wasn't some low class Saiyan, it was Vegeta's own parents. The King & Queen appear to be withered & old, but once they each eat a senzu bean, they get significantly younger. Now the Earth alliance has some new allies on its way to Namek. Meanwhile Frieza calls his father to come to Namek & train with him saying "Ginyu revealed one of them had become a Super Saiyan, & if one of them has, its only a matter of time before the rest follow. I've never needed to train before, but now its time. Father you are the only being worthy of being a training partner" & orders his forces to collect Namek's dragonballs while he & Cold train.

& thats where I will end it for now.
