The Future Saga is the worst written arc to come out of Super

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 04:43 PM PDT

The Future Saga is not only the worst written arc of Super, but the worst written arc in all of the canon Dragon Ball lore. The only reason I don't rank Dragon Ball Minus worse, is because that's less of a story and more of a collection of backstory information vomited onto paper.

I'm surprised this arc doesn't get more flack. Hell I'm surprised I didn't give it more flack back then. And just to clarify, I'm talking more about the anime than the manga. The manga version is still quite bad, but the cancerous mass that is the anime version overshadows it. Where to even start with this:

    • The Android saga already made Time Travel too convoluted, but you could make a decent amount of sense and it doesn't completely derail the story by being taking too much priority. In this arc, they not only make it 100x more complicated, to the point where the rules and by extension the story become incomprehensible. It makes Zamasu's plan, actions, and origins really difficult to understand. I don't even understand what versions of Zamasu are the villains or versions of the universes they've been messing with.

    • Even for Dragon Ball, the level of "new powerup/technique becoming immediately useless" is absurd.

      1. In the anime, Trunks gets a completely random (and rather ugly) SSJ form that's useless on arrival. At least when Piccolo gets a powerup he gets to look good for a fight or two. Trunks' rage transformation barely changes the plot and the most he can do is give the others time to escape.
      2. Vegeta gets a powerup and beats Goku Black, but that advantage is erased by Goku Black "getting mad" and pulling new powers right out of nowhere.
      3. The Mafuba gets reintroduced only to become a less funny joke than it was in the Piccolo Saga.
      4. Goku and Vegeta fuse only to get defused at the last second.
      5. Trunks pulls a magic Spirit Bomb Sword straight out of his ass and Zamasu just becomes Giygas from Earthbound.
    • In the Anime, Goku and Vegeta go to the future a total of three times. For this point, I'm focusing on the second time. Everyone gets their butts kicked the first time. They make 0 preparations to fight Goku Black and Zamasu and get defeated again. This is a waste of time and the worst form of padding. Not to mention that they go at that point because somehow one or both of the Zamasus were supposed to disappear, but because Dragon Ball operates on Multiverse theory, Beerus killing Zamasu in the main timeline was never going to affect the other Zamasus they were facing. So whoever was writing this must've not been paying attention to the rules being expanded upon, but it was too late to correct things.

    • Mai, despite being one of the star characters, has nothing to do here. She narrowly survives the first episode and she leads an army that barely gets any screen time. She also tries to shoot Black with a sniper rifle and that was just hilarious. The most we get out of her is a vaguely hinted at an attraction between her and Trunks. Mai is only memorable for being a part of the Pilaf gang, whom aren't present in the future at all. So there's no reason why this couldn't have been an entirely made-up character specifically for this arc.

    • I could go on about the ending but enough people explained how terrible that is. To keep it short, it's filled plot convenient bullshit, it's horribly dour but played off like another day in the life, but worst of all, it takes Trunks, a fan-favorite character who had a near-perfect ending to his story almost 3 decades ago and completely ruins their life. And what was the payoff for that? Two Zenos instead of one.

    • I'll finish with Zamasu and Goku Black.

      • Zamasu is a villain that could've been different from all the other villains but ultimately wasn't. The "people are bad and do bad things" motivation is a badly overused and lazy cliche. This could've been swallowed better if we were shown his journey so we know why he arrived at that conclusion but that didn't happen. What little we see, he might as well have been a genocidal maniac from the start. Also, in the Namek Saga, Vegeta said it was a better idea to make him immortal rather than Gohan because Gohan wasn't experienced enough in combat to make immortality work to his advantage. It basically showed that being immortal wasn't some instant win scenario. Despite showing that Zamasu isn't close to a fraction of Saiyan power, He's able to keep up with just fine just because he's immortal. At least in the manga, Zamasu used magic to make up for his lack of battle power. In the manga, he's just fighting like everyone else.
      • In terms of Goku Black, he mostly does his job as an incredibly marketable evil Super Saiyan. It is interesting that he has to learn to use Goku's body, but that doesn't manifest in anything besides Super Saiyan RoÅ›e. The Kamehameha just isn't that special since it's just a ki blast, and Instant Transmission is something Supreme Kais could already use. He does, however, have tons of plot armor. It's insane to me that just give him random new moves and techniques, while also hinting at there being a bigger reason for that, but never giving us an explanation. And with all of that, we have to ask if this is really just a body-swapped version of Goku. Goku Black is so radically different from Goku that I have to assume he either modified his body somehow, or some aspect of him beyond his mind and spirit imprinted on to Goku's body when the wish was made. Why is he so much more powerful than Goku and Vegeta when he's the one that had buildup to Goku's current power? Why is the zenkai boost such a big deal for Black, but not so for Goku and Vegeta?

This arc feels like someone drew some really cool concept art, an executive saw it, and they said they should make merchandise write a story around that. This story reeks of thoughtless fanservice and writing by committee. It really does surprise me that people say this was good if you turn your brain off. I remember thinking about this stuff when this series was still in production, and I was definitely not thinking hard about what was happening then.

There's something about this fight, it's awesome. I don't know if it's the art or what, but it's my favorite fight of the entire arc just behind Goku VS Freeza.

    Pointless question about Kais

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 09:21 PM PDT

I recently watched all of DBZ and have started DBS, so I know how dumb this question may be but why wasent it taken into consideration. The question being why wasn't Beerus worried about Buu when he killed a bunch of the kais in universe 7, saying its explained Beerus would die if the supreme kai did. So why didnt the writers or anyone take that into consideration when creating Super and make such a poor attempt or plan imo.

Is XenoVerse 2 worth getting nowadays? Looks cool for ten bucks on the ps store. I've heard good and bad things and I need internet strangers to make decisions for me.

    Missing music during certain parts.

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 08:29 PM PDT

Spoiler: I was watching the cell saga and got to the part where Goku sacrifices himself to save Goku, but the music for when he teleports cell away is different from the clips on YouTube. This was on the funimation app and the clips on YouTube were also from funimation. Does anyone know why this happening?

What is your most Contraversial DBZ opinions?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 05:43 AM PDT

Heres mine Dragonball Z works better in Monster of the week style stories. As many of the films are better than what we got in the Sagas and i wish An official alternate timeline for the movies would be realesed.

GT is better overall than Super but super has a better story structure. Also the kid goku arc in GT was great but shouldve ended after General rildos arc. This one decision killed GT in the eyes of fans.

Tenkaichi 3 and Budokai 3 are still better than all the modern DBZ games. Fighters is good, but its just MVC with a dbz skin.

Super should move on from having beerus around and either kill him off as a villian or have vegeta become GOD. The character is annoying at this point.

Cell shouldve been brought back not frieza.

SSJ4 is still the best design in the franchise.

Does Future Trunks try to disrupt Perfect Cell's transformation in the manga?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 06:46 AM PDT

Future Trunks definitely doesn't toy with his enemies, unlike Goku and Vegeta. In the anime, when Cell is transforming after absorbing 18, I remember Trunks actually trying to disrupt Cell's transformation instead of just standing there. That is, until Cell roars and pushes him back.

Does this happen in the manga as well?
