The most subtle insight into a character in Dragon Ball

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 08:00 AM PST

So, I was watching Mistare Fusion's Dragon Ball Dissection's Saiyan Arc, as he is going over the time after Goku's death, in a conversation between God and Popo. He is talking about how Goku passed on to the other world, even though he was killed by a demon. And in doing so, we see a moment between Piccolo and Gohan that exemplifies his character with very little dialogue.

I'll paste what he says, because I think its brilliant, and I want to know, your opinion on this.

God also reveals that he knows he will die within a year. He doesn't know if that's because his lifespan will end or because piccolo will be killed by the Saiyans, but he does say that because of their link, piccolo will be aware of this too. Because of that, he speculates that piccolo might be desperate to leave some kind of legacy behind, even if it's through Goku son.

After all, if piccolo is just going to die, what does he care if some aliens take over earth. Granted we'll also see a bit later that piccolo takes some sadistic pleasure in the idea of twisting his arch-nemesis son into his own image, but it's a pretty intriguing glimpse at piccolo; How he's changing and how such changes actually manifest themselves.

As for the other moment, just prior to the scene with God, right before piccolo takes off, Gohan begs piccolo not to leave him, crying that "it's not fair" and piccolo says something particularly fascinating.

He tells Gohan that if he's going to blame anything, blame his fate, just as piccolo does.

That might very well be the deepest most subtle insight into a character the entire franchise has ever had, and this is not a franchise known for being either deep or subtle. It might actually be my favorite exchange in the entire franchise. I have no idea what Toriyama was thinking when he wrote it. Maybe he left it so open-ended so that fans could interpret what they wanted to not force him to actually think about what it means but it has so many implications for this character.

Maybe it simply refers to what Kami sama would talk about in the next scene, piccolo knows he's going to die and his cursing his inability to prevent that, which in and of itself is a pretty brilliant and unsettling idea. But I can't help but extrapolate this so that not only does it perfectly encapsulate his and Gohans relationship, it actually sums up Ma Junior's entire life.

Piccolo has no personal connection to Gohan at this point. We will see him be a caregiver, we will see a make Gohan stronger, but that's not because he cares about Gohan. it's because he needs Gohan. He has a task for him to accomplish. Perhaps something he won't be able to see to the end himself, and isn't that why piccolo himself was created in first place? Because his father or previous incarnation or whatever you want to call him, was about to die and needed someone to avenge him.

He doesn't live for himself. He lives to achieve someone else's goal. Up until this point, piccolo has only ever existed for one purpose, to kill Goku. He tried it once and he failed and then he just…... went away for five years, not bothering anybody, and by the time we see him again he's already become less demonic. So maybe that's why he wasn't more proactive in the meantime.

Maybe he was already starting to question his own purpose. By killing son Goku, he achieved what he was fated to do, but immediately after he's accomplished that, he's training Goku's son and anxiously waiting for Goku to come back to life. And now that he's finally fulfilled his purpose and might actually be able to live for himself….. none of it matters because he's just going to die anyway.

Nothing in his life has made him feel like he has any control, any direction over anything except perhaps raising this child. So I can definitely imagine that this is a person who regularly curses his own fate.

Out of all of the videos games released, which one is your favorite?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 03:47 PM PST

This is kind of two questions, because I'd like to purchase one for my playstation, but also I am curious to see what the community thinks of the DBZ games.

I grew up playing The Legacy of Goku, III is hands down my favorite. But also there were the fighting games such as Budokai.

Kakarot recently released and Fighterz is a great game with identical animation to the show.

guess i'm just worried about getting my ass handed to me in Fighterz.

I am spriting Dragon Ball characters in 8-bit

So, I decided to sprite some characters from the Dragon Ball series, in 8-bit.

Starting it all off is with Son Goku, Kakarot, or whatever you want to call him.

Feel free to use these sprites as long as you give credit to me, okey?

Guys which arc do you consider as the best in Dragon Ball?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 12:42 PM PST

For me it has always been the Frieza Saga. The sheer thrill, ominous vibes, the constant horror, the incessant wait for a savior to arrive, the epic entries of strong characters like Piccolo and Goku to save their friends at the last moment and the epic finale...
I don't think any other arc has succeeded in capturing these various emotions of the viewers.

Rewatching GT, why does the main cast keep forgetting they can fly?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 08:31 AM PST

Goku and Pan both fall victim to a breaking/falling pipe on planet M-2, plus Goku repeatedly struggles to get away from Rilldo's waves of metal by trying to run from them.

Edit: also trunks' metal slab gets shattered because Goku and pan forget they can move at the speed of fucking light granted trunks is fine but Goku and pan still believed it was him at the time

    I'm a new DB fan, I have a question

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 08:41 AM PST

Watched a lot of DB lately and enjoying it. However, Saiyans always seem to wait a while before going SS. Esp Goku. Is it a matter of pride to fight/win in their base form, or a matter of energy consumption? Thx

How the hell broly learns so quickly and adjusts his power level to insane levels?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:11 PM PST

He could take on with his base form on SSJG, we see that he seems to be weak when displayed to a new kind of power but then he learns REALLY quickly, how exactly?

    Hypothetical actors for live action

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:01 PM PST

This is just for fun guys, lets not be too angry. Tell us who you think would fit a good live action version of a character from Dragon Ball.

I came up with a few:

Yajirobe: Jack Black Korin: Kyle Gass Kami: Morgan Freeman Piccolo: Samuel Jackson Vegeta: Adam Driver Mr. Satan: John C Rielly

Pretty bad picks, but it would make a great comedy.

I also think Andy Samberg would make a good goofy Goku.
