How The Heart Virus Actually Saved Present Goku's Life

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 05:13 PM PDT

When I was a kid, hearing Future Trunks exposit the details of his tragic timeline genuinely scared me (This is one of many reasons I still consider History of Trunks the best storytelling in ALL of Dragonball). We didn't know what these seemingly unstoppable Red Ribbon cyborgs looked like yet, which built quality suspense (It was a smart detail to have Goku say "I wish we'd gotten Trunks to show us a picture").

The heart virus was even more chilling from a mortality standpoint, as the thought of someone as powerful as Goku (or any main character) being killed by a disease had honestly never occurred to me. What the heck kind of virus could kill a super saiyan or render even a senzu bean useless? Toriyama made some very effective storytelling decisions in crafting this first stage of the android arc.

Once #19 & #20 (who'd later be revealed by Bulma as a mechanized Dr. Gero) arrived and Goku went SS, I thought "This is it! The battle to change the future begins! Go get 'em, Goku!" Even if these androids weren't the saga's final threat, which many suspected even before 17 & 18 were introduced (especially since Vegeta hadn't even shown up yet), #19 seemed as good as done.

All this buildup made it that much more impacting when (GASP) SS Goku LOST as the virus hit him right then! This fight really threw me, as I never expected Goku to be taken out of the action so soon. When Gohan mentioned that his dad never got sick and thus didn't take his medicine during the three year training gap, I thought "This can't be it. This can't be how Goku dies a second time! What now?"

Then, Vegeta shocked me yet again by unveiling SS and systematically destroying #19 before scaring Gero into strategic retreat. I thought I could rest easy while Goku recovered (Those nightmares he had were scary). After watching the tables turn for the saiyan prince against #18, however, I realized in hindsight that Goku getting sick later instead of experiencing it earlier was near-perfect timing.

Think about it. SS Vegeta couldn't even injure 18, and Trunks was knocked down by 17 in one blow before a second hit from 18 defeated him. Had Goku been there, the cyborg twins or #16 would've killed him! Quoting Tien: "We've got to face facts! Goku is powerful... But he's not so different from Trunks or Vegeta! We can't win!! Not even with Goku..." Yes, Goku still almost died and was lucky Vegeta saved him.

Nonetheless, being absent at that time allowed him to avoid 17 & 18 so he could train to get stronger after healing while they were thankfully laid back enough to take their sweet time traveling to his home. Some may criticize this as overly convenient, but I consider it intelligent irony. The very thing that killed Future Goku and contributed to dooming Trunks' timeline ended up saving Present Goku.

Do you think ultra instinct will get reduced to a jobber form like the rest of his forms?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 04:23 PM PDT

Once Goku learns Ultra Instinct and beats someone with it. Do you think all the future opponents he face, are going to be way stronger, and he loses and has to learn a new form after it again?

    Raditz discussion

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 02:36 PM PDT

So, I don't know if this has been talked about before on here but I'll ask anyways. We all know Raditz got canned pretty hard, so my discussion is do you think he deserved better? He was the "main characters" big brother after all. Do you think he should have gotten more screen time? Maybe even a redemption arc like Vegeta got? Do you like the way it is now? I wanna hear other opinions on this as I was just thinking about this recently.

Are the Kais/gods supposed to intervene or not?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 03:49 PM PDT

Shin and Kibito were investigating Buu, with the intention to stop Babidi from awaking him.

But where were they when Frieza was blowing up planets and cruelly enslaving half the universe?

I get that they might not intervene when it's just one planet at risk (like Cell or Sayains on Earth)... but Frieza was dominating a large part of the universe.

(I just started watching Super, so it's possible this is answered more comprehensively at some point...)
