Is DBS: Broly the first Dragon Ball product to utilize leitmotif?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2020 05:15 PM PDT

In case anyone doesn't know, leitmotif is a term for a recurring musical theme that's associated with a specific character or concept. A well known example would be "Imperial March" as Darth Vader's theme in the Star Wars movies

If I'm not mistaken, DBS: Broly might be the first time Dragon Ball has been scored with this technique in mind. Broly, Goku, and Freeza all have notable recurring themes throughout the movie. I don't think Vegeta does, but my ear just might have missed something

Norihito Sumitomo did score Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, but I don't recall any recurring themes in either of those movies. While there were a few uses of themes in the Super anime and soooort of Kai: TFC, this wasn't leitmotif in the traditional sense so much as reusing the exact same track for each instance

To my knowledge, Shunsuke Kikuchi, Kenji Yamamoto, and Akihito Tokunaga never utilized leitmotif to any extent

I have no knowledge on any of the replacement scores by dubs that did replace the music, but I tend not to put replacement soundtracks on the same level. That's not a knock against them, it's just that they're a step even further removed from the original creators' intent

Can anyone well-versed in Dragon Ball music correct me if I'm wrong? Or was Broly really the first time leitmotif has been used?

    Regarding the New Broly's power...

    Posted: 18 Mar 2020 02:21 PM PDT

If Paragus said that Broly was accessing the power of the Great Ape but kept the agility and speed in his human form, which ended up being a challenge for Super Saiyan God Goku, is the Great Ape form stronger now? Or is it that Broly is too strong on his own?

I'm legitimately curious about the lack of action on the part of the DBZ Earth's governments and authority figures to at least try to curb or form an intelligence organization to identify super-powered human beings / aliens that shoot lasers and blow up cities.

    Posted: 18 Mar 2020 09:52 PM PDT

T.M.I: I would not want to live in the Dragon Ball version of Earth.

A question I've had for the longest time. We know for example that capitalism is alive and well on Earth's societies. There are also like, weird animal-human hybrids walking around. They do shopping, live life, raise kids, study, learn, and basically do human things, but with weirder looking sci-fi buildings and more advanced technology.

Now, I know basically nothing about the world of Dragon Ball outside of the confines of what we all have seen from Cartoon Network and the shows. But there's gotta be a government, right? And shouldn't be a little worried that every few years, there are always extinction-level events occurring?

For example, some incomprehensibly powerful, god-like Bug takes over the news station and makes an equally incomprehensible proclamation about some stupid game to decide the fate of the planet.

    Why?

Wait what? Hold on, let's talk about this. What the hell is happening?

After the planet literally blows up and kills everyone, they are all resurrected again miraculously. We know for a fact that dead people who return know exactly when they've died and returned. So, every single person on earth knows the demise they've suffered, but have basically lived through death without a single explanation given to them. How many would be permanently mentally scarred from that experience?

What about the time when a giant beetle monster started destroying a major city? Or when they lost their moon? How many couples were looking up romantically at the bright full moon, only to see a tiny ass fucking laser beam break orbit, travel impossibly fast, and then blow it up?

Why is a paramilitary organization like the Red Ribbon Army allowed to exist? Is the State government just hopelessly inept?

Now obviously, DBZ is ultimately a kid's cartoon, and we shouldn't read too much into it. But it's like the Earth's government doesn't even care whether or not there are people out there in the world equal to walking nuclear bombs.

I guess I'm asking why there aren't things like "Sokovia Accords". Governments who are genuinely concerned about the fate of their tiny little world, leaders who can sit down with these people and tell them, "Hey, we live on this planet too. Let us know about your activities that are constantly destroying the world and costing us trillions of zeni. Are you or are you not part of humanity?
