Vegeta’s goodbye

You know, I always used to think that when Vegeta hugs Trunks before he dies, his final words to him weren't that impactful. All he said is "I'm proud of you". I definitely get that "I love you, son" would have been very out of character, but I always thought one line didn't really do jt for me. But it just occurred to me how perfect that line actually was. For most of his life, the only thing that mattered to him was his own personal pride. Even when his goal was to replace Frieza as ruler of the universe, I don't think it was for the riches or ass-kissing by Zarbon or Dodoria, It was just for the pride of knowing he's on top. He constantly fumes over Goku's ability to keep up with and even surpass him in power and skill, despite being lowborn, as a stain on his pride. It was all about him. He never really had anyone close to him in his life. All he had was his own sense of self-worth. So when he expresses having pride, specifically that word, in someone else, that's actually way more powerful coming from him than just about any other phrase would be. And they say Dragon Ball Z isn't deep.
