Anyone else think the original Dragon Ball is legitimately hilarious?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 02:29 PM PDT

Rewatching DB, and Goku being surprised Bulma's missing her balls and Oolong finding out Goku isn't a girl by seeing him piss standing up are scenes that legitimately still makes me crack up. Anyone else vibe with this?

    Broly vs Goku (ruto830)

My own version of this epic moment

    Posted: 16 May 2020 01:44 AM PDT

I know that GT series is not canon and that it is not loved like the Z, but I've always been a fan of its character design, especially the SS4, so I decided to portray Goku in my style. I entitled this acrylic and watercolor piece "Sunset Flight". Hope you like it!

Is anyone else... just kind of bored of Goku as a character?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:43 AM PDT

Please don't take that to mean "I hate Goku" or "he needs to die/be removed from the show".

Rather, I feel like Goku, although iconic, has become pretty uninteresting over the years. It's like the show is deathly afraid of allowing anyone to truly surpass him, other than newly-introduced villains, which of course he eventually pushes himself to defeat.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that formula, because it's so much of who he is as a character. But... well, personally? I'm kind of ready for someone else to step into the limelight.

Personally, I would love to see Tien, Piccolo, and Gohan get some time to shine. And not just "instantly reach levels of power the same as Goku", but actually see them going on their own journeys of self-improvement.

With Gohan, I was always disappointed with his character in the Buu saga (and onward), because to me, it felt like a betrayal of who he was at the end of the Cell saga. It's not that "he became the new Goku", but when he finally unlocks his hidden potential and transforms into SSJ2, it was like a metaphor with him coming to grips with who he really is; someone who doesn't want to fight, but understands that sometimes you need to. Very different from any other character.

So when he becomes "happy-go-lucky dad who doesn't have time for training", it felt like he suddenly completely forgot his conversation with Android 16, before seeing his head stomped on.

In the case of Tien, I honestly feel like he's such an interesting character, with so much potential. I love the idea of being able to explore his own personal demons a bit, maybe causing him to seek some form of enlightenment or some means of acquiring the power necessary to stand up against these increasing cosmic-level threats.

Finally, we've got Piccolo. To be honest, he's sort of an interesting conundrum to me, because I honestly like most of what they've done with his character. I love that he's finally found some semblance of peace, and still has an incredibly close relationship with Gohan, more like a father than even Goku is.

But, I also don't like how useless and ineffective he's become. I definitely don't think he should be a power-house, in the same vein as Saiyans typically are, but I'd like to see him presented as a more perceptive, strategic fighter. We've seen him manipulate both his body and his ki in extremely interesting ways, and I'd love to see him as more of a "sneaky fighter".

Also, I would love to see him explore the idea of "magic" a little bit more. Maybe he could begin learning from the various Kai's, learning more about the universe, other potential threats, not to mention new techniques. I love the idea of Picollo becoming "the guy everyone goes to when they need new information", as opposed to info-dumps always coming from Whis, King Kai, or Supreme Kai.

Plus, if you had Piccolo pouring over all kinds of ancient scrolls and forbidden texts during is off-time, it would totally give him room to learn all kinds of crazy new abilities in combat, and maybe even come up with ideas for how to make various other characters stronger.

And you know who else I would LOVE to see make a return? Launch. For some reason, I feel like she and Yamcha would have a hilarious relationship dynamic, with him being enamored with the sweet blue-haired Launch, and utterly terrified of angry yellow-haired Launch. Although... I want to say I heard someone mention there was a time she was interested in Tien?

So I dunno. That would just be me.

Either way, though, I'm honestly just a little bit bored of Goku. Dragon Ball has so many amazing characters, that to continually focus on Goku and Vegeta feels like it does a bit of a disservice to the franchise.

Anyone else heartbroken at the delay with a new series or movie?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 10:42 AM PDT

I've seen people recently in this sub complaining about the lack of proper discussion recently and the influx of fan art and cosplay, but it's completely understandable. It has been 1.5 years since the Broly movie and more than two years since the anime ended. It's hard to keep the enthusiasm going after so long.

I understand there's complexity to it. I understand they're doing whatever they think it's right. But after making a personal effort to get people into the movie, to make it successful... Seeing that it was successful and it still didn't have any effect on what matters to me as a fan: a new anime.

It just makes me feel I shouldn't bother. I have no effect on this anyway, it being a success or not is meaningless.

Anyway, bottom line: I miss the active community that was going on. I miss waiting impatiently for the next episode. And the manga, which I'm loving... It's just not the same. I really hope we have new Dragon Ball coming soon.

My fan-fiction/art from 25 years ago [OC]

    Posted: 16 May 2020 05:06 PM PDT

Quarantine things, in some old boxes I found a comic I drew 25 years ago as a child. I remembered I did it, but I thought it was lost, it was a surprise! I scanned and translated it to English, the original was in Basque.

I uploaded it to Imgur, here it is: Dragon Ball: the lost sequel

I guess I didn't like GT so I decided to make my own Dragon Ball sequel. So it's set after the EoZ, where the series ended, Goku training Oob and all that. I had Pilaf gathering the dragon balls too and finally making his three wishes, that setting is similar to GT... There is a switch in the middle of the story. They are 20 pages in total but I never finished it...

Well, it's not great, but don't be too hard, I was just a child and I had a good time doing it!

looking back on it I think without any religion in my life DBZ was what really taught me a lot about morality and how brutal life can be and how important it is to still work hard and keep the people you’ve lost close because they’re still watching you.

It's like, I don't really believe there was a point in our own reality where goku actually used frieza's own destructo disc against him and cut him in half, it's more about the message

Read the whole series or watch the whole series?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 03:43 PM PDT

Hey there, I started reading Dragon Ball after my brother got me the first Dragon Ball Manga, and I enjoyed it, so I decided to keep reading until i came to the Z part(around volume 20 or 21). I was wondering if the animations in the fights of DBZ and Super are worth watching, or should I just finish the series with the manga and if there is any noticable difference in manga and anime(please don't say what the differences are, just answer with yes or no(bcuz of spoilers)) and obviously which one is better. Btw while reading and thinking about this question, I came up to the idea to read the story and watch the fights. Do you think it is a good thing to go through the series that way?(I am new to reading manga but watched some animes)

    Can pure blooded Saiyans cry?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 06:59 PM PDT

The thought popped into my head after I rewatched the 2019 Broly movie, the scene where Gine and Bardock send Goku to earth, I don't know why but I feel like Gine would have shed a little tear because of her kindness and warm heart. It then got me thinking about sad momments where Saiyans could have cried. The first thing that popped into my head was when Krillin died for the first time however goku didn't cry but instead became filled with rage, the next thing I thought of was when krillin died on namek but it's the same case there. So, has a full blooded saiyan ever cried?

Where was Tien when kid Buu blew up Earth?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 12:23 PM PDT

So Tien shows up and backs up Gohan. Then he gets KO'd by Buu's lower half. Gohan gets absorbed, goku teleports away, Buu goes after Goku, then Dende heals Tien... Later Dende and Satan show up to watch the Vegito fight... Where the HFIL did Tien go? What was he doing? Where did he go? Did he go to Disney land one last time while the lines were gone? SOME ONE HELP ME, this has been drivin me nuts.

Yes, when Dende healed him in the anime he got right up and asked where Goku and Buu were. He was never scene again.

Unique Misprint Dragon Ball Z Card?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:57 AM PDT

So I found this card in my collection, it's one of the earlier 2002ish Score Dragon Ball Z card. I have a bunch, about 2 thousand but this one's different from the rest. It has a double sided ripple at the bottom which is about 1 cm in width. I definitely didn't do this to the card, and couldn't find anything like it. Is this a good or valuable misprint? Did I find a UNIQUE CARD.

Here's a link to a video for the card- https://photos.app.goo.gl/cLdSCopfCEjpHVAH6
