Super Saiyan and the decadence of DB

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 05:21 PM PST

This is something that I've been thinking about for quite a while. The introduction of super saiyan, and all the baggage that came along with it in my opinion was the beginning of DB's long decline into indulgent decadence which continues to this day. Everything that follows super saiyan displays all the worst aspects of DB and multiplies them considerably. The power creep issues that had already been silently piling up beforehand absolutely exploded and was the "point-of-no-return" for essentially a very small selection of characters to have the focus and the rest to be confined to uselessness and obscurity. The more super saiyan and it's endless and increasing ridiculous offshoots appeared, the less imagination and subtlety was needed.

Who needs all the unique, interesting, mystic, and varied fighting styles and techniques of the series before, when SSJ and brute strength is all that's needed? And if SSJ doesn't work? Just do some vague training and pull a stronger form out of your arse. And when that one doesn't cut it? Just jump to the next one. Each one does have its own weaknesses, but the power struggles are barely interesting.

Now, this doesn't mean I don't like Super Saiyan. In fact, I quite like the first few times super saiyan shows up. It's the further applications and the taking of granted of it that really starts to taint things.

Goku turning super saiyan is almost essential for the way that Toriyama had treated the concept of Goku and saiyan in the past two arcs. Super Saiyan was the conclusion for Goku and answered everything he needed. He went through learning through his brother that he was a saiyan, felt disgusted at the actions his people took, saw first-hand multiple times how being a saiyan affected his life, and then at that pivotal moment when Vegeta broke and opened up to Goku about what Freeza had done to their species. By vegeta's pleading, Goku was avenging the entire saiyan race, whether he really wanted to or not. At first Goku had his normal spirit while tearing into Freeza. But as the situation got more abs more dire we already see Goku start to change.

As Freeza shoots the beam through Piccolo we see Goku's demeanor take a turn. He straight up tells Gohan and Kuririn to get the hell out of there and they were just in his way. And as Kuririn died helplessly right in front of Goku, everything finally snaps. His frustration finally boils over and he's different. Freeza wasn't dealing with Goku anymore, he was dealing with Kakarot, even if just in those moments. And that was enough, that straight up bestial rage that exploded, that allowed Kakarot to reach a power so overwhelming that his form changed. His face angular and scowling and snapping at the smallest provocations, the opposite of normal Goku, his saiyan side exploding and embraced. Freeza couldn't stop himself and created the single thing he feared most, and it was his downfall.

That should have been as far as the transformations got. Goku has the power of kaio-ken which increased his power over many times but strains his body enormously which he gained through strenuous training, and through his turmoil Super Saiyan, his true power coming from his true origin. Those two are defining for older Goku and both were executed perfectly at this time.

But it couldn't last. Then Future Trunks is shown to be a SSJ. Then Vegeta. Then Gohan. The Vegeta and Trunks find higher grades of SSJ. Then Gohan becomes SSJ2. It was already downhill from here and it was clear that Super Saiyan was the de-facto lazy way to advance the story now. No more unique methods of fighting or techniques, now the slide into the SSJ dick-measuring competition was beginning, to see how much power you can lazily get if you basically wish hard enough. The emotion and underlying message of Super Saiyan was now all but forgotten, from a horrifying awe-some form created from the breaking of a man under great stress to something that was essentially as routine as eating breakfast and taking a shower. I honestly couldn't care about super saiyan anymore after it became the crutch of the whole series during the Cell saga.

Seeing future trunks become SSJ was momentarily cool but now I feel that's just because of the shock factor and subconsciously it was already the first break in the armour of what SSJ represented by seeing someone else do it so easily.

And then Vegeta does it. I'm actually going to give a pass to Vegeta being able to go SSJ. Because if anyone should deserve to go SSJ besides Goku, it's obviously him and Vegeta being able to do it has as much relevance to his character as it does for Goku. Vegeta prided himself as being the prince of all saiyans, the best of the best, and seeing lowly Kakarot do it was a snapping point for him. He had already had his ego crushed by Kakarot before and was already seething inside about it, seeing him as a SSJ after he had convinced himself that he was was just too much. And we see what Vegeta put himself through to get there. It's pretty clear that if Vegeta never became a super saiyan, he would have either died trying or would simply have gone insane. Vegeta and Kakarot have the common denominator of their struggling pasts and pure rage to assist them. SSJ really meant something to both Goku and Vegeta and it should have been the pinnacle of transformations for the whole series. Everything past should have been the both of them using their new power cleverly through tough situations and coming up with new techniques boosted through SSJ if possible, similar to the original Dragon Ball.

Seeing everyone else be able to transform, including Goten and kid Trunks is truly ridiculous, as well as the transformation of SSJ3 which has pretty much absolutely no point outside of money and such (you have to expect those kinds of things though). Just throwing more and more forms onto the pile just makes the concept of super saiyan more and more of just a crutch and nothing more.

It also does the horrible job of adding exponentially to the already problematic power-creep DB was experiencing. Goku and Vegeta were already getting dangerously more powerful than everyone else and SSJ definitely made it worse, but not unfixable. Piccolo, Tien, and Kuririn at least could have still been useful if that's as far as it went. But the endless power boosts and upgrades just made everyone who wasn't a saiyan or saiyan half-breed condemned to absolute obscurity never to come back. All the creative and unusual strategies all the non saiyan characters had have no relevance anymore since none of them have a fucking chance anymore. It's just a power dick measuring contest to see who can find the highest version of super saiyan and give off the best light show.

I haven't watched much of DB super at all, and that's probably because the decline of DBZ from the absolutely excellent Saiyan and Namek sagas to the endless power up light-show and "super saiyan bargain sale", as Vegeta put it, and the absolute aimlessness of the later parts of the Cell saga and especially Buu (Buu saga was garbage, come at me) was enough for me. Super seems to be the continuation of the worst parts of Z to me, so ehh. Its pretty much not even the same series anymore.

I just realized Jiren's backstory works a lot better without the exposition dump

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 10:31 AM PST

I was watching the fight between Jiren and MUI Goku, and I'm stuck on the shot of the closeup on Jiren's eyes showing the dead bodies on the ground. Imagine if that was all we saw of his past up until that point. His motivations would have been a bit clearer, but he still would have retained a lot of mystery. Does anything else even happen in the exposition episode?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 05:58 PM PST

Imo there were many things the manga did better and that the anime did better I think if both were mixed the arc would've been amazing but still a nice story with amazing fights
