The first half of the Majin Buu Saga is and always will be the peak of Dragon Ball to me.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 04:56 PM PST

The Other World Tournament, The Great Saiyaman Saga, Videl, Gohan training Videl how to fly, the beginning of the World Tournament, the big Goten vs. Trunks, the introduction of Supreme Kai, Babidi and Dabura, Vegeta's mid-life crisis and his ultimate sacrifice. Yes, it's incredibly flawed and all over the place, but Dragon Ball has never been perfect or all that extremely well written.

I think one reason I hold this part of the story in such high regard is because of when the first half of the Majin Buu Saga aired in America and it gives me intense 2001-2002 nostalgia. Like I can remember the day and where I was when I first watched the Vegeta/Badidi/mind control episodes and seeing Vegeta go through this mid-life crisis and allow this evil small wizard take control of himself just so he could gain the extra strength to fight Goku. It was the weirdest and coolest thing I had ever seen in a particular animated show by that point as a kid and this was my first introduction to the evil side of Vegeta.

And with this awful pandemic that has took over the world, you can bet my nostalgia for watching Dragon Ball Z has increased tenfold lately.

What if Goku and the gang hadn’t met Beerus or Whis till an inevitable tournament of power arc?

Meaning there was no battle of the gods arc, no interactions with the gods beyond the Kai. Resurrection of Frieza would still occur.

Is future Trunks the most unlucky character in the multiverse?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:25 AM PST

I mean, his Earth gets destroyed by androids, he goes back in time, changes things, then goes back and everything is just as destroyed. Hey ho live and learn let's rebuild.

    ...

Then a short while later his Earth gets destroyed again, this time by Goku black, and he goes back in time again to try to solve it. Not only does this solve nothing, it results first in every person on earth dying, then the entire multiverse being destroyed.

All the while he gets to visit an earth where everything went well, his mother, father, and friends are still alive, and his enemies have turned into friends.

What Are YOUR Favorite Super Saiyan Transformation Scenes?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:51 PM PST

Here are my personal Current Top 10 Super Saiyan Transformations, feedback is welcome: 👍

(Note: I'm NOT asking for your favorite forms, but your favorite onscreen transformations)

    1) Goku unlocks super saiyan on Namek (Frieza Saga)- It would feel blasphemous to put anything else at the top. This is the one that started it all and set the bar for future transformation scenes in anime. Everything about it is just so impacting: The shock & tragedy of a powerless Goku watching his best friend explode after begging his worst enemy to show mercy, the anguish on his face as he vows not to let Frieza get away with it, Namek's clouds darkening with lightning, Goku's eyes going white as he yells with the dimples at the corners of his mouth wrinkling into a frightening face of pure rage.

    2) Gohan unlocks super saiyan 2 (Cell Saga)- The culmination of Gohan's character development since he first revealed his power against Raditz. This was a moment years in the making, and it fired on all emotional cylinders. The imagery of the bird flying (which I interpreted as symbolizing the peace & beauty of the Earth #16 loved) as Gohan stands with newfound resolution gives way to all inhibitions fading. This is one of few instances where, as someone who grew up on the English dub, I prefer the original Japanese entirely. Hironobu Kageyama's masterful work on "Unmei No Hi Tamashii/Tai Tamashii" sells the importance of this event, as Gohan finally takes the mantle of Earth's savior.

    3) Future Trunks unlocks super saiyan (The History of Trunks)- This was a close call for 2nd place, because History of Trunks remains what I consider the best storytelling in all of Dragonball and this scene still makes me want to cry. In some ways, it illustrates pain & rage more than Goku's transformation on Namek (particularly the detail of Trunks' fist clenching so hard that blood drips). Gohan's SS 2 just barely edges it out for being an overall more anticipated achievement in a longer running character arc, but I'd say they're about equal in terms of raw emotion from the characters. Trunks suffers so much, arguably more so than any other main lead (Yes, even Gohan), and losing Future Gohan was his tipping point. He cries out at the unforgiving cruelty of the situation, cursing this nightmare he's lived in his whole life while at the same time voicing his own inner strength. This was what Gohan sacrificed himself for, compelled to fight the good fight to his last breath with the knowledge that his legacy would live on through his pupil and his death would make Trunks stronger.

    4) Vegeta debuts super saiyan (Android Saga)- That piano theme, enough said. In all seriousness, this was a major "Holy sh\t!"* moment for me as a kid since I honestly didn't expect to see another super saiyan so soon. Back then, I thought it was something only Goku or Trunks could do since they were pure of heart. So, naturally, when the wicked saiyan prince pulled it off, I was pleasantly shocked.

    5) Goku debuts super saiyan 3 (Buu Saga)- I'll never forget the first time I almost cringed (in a good way) at how long Sean Schemmel dragged his screaming out for this sequence. Love him or hate him, none can deny his dedication as a voice-actor. After SS 2, I wasn't sure what to expect since I assumed that was the peak of saiyan power. I was curious as Goku demonstrated his forms to Buu & Bobbidi, wondering how he'd fare any better than Majin Vegeta had. Once he said "And THIS is to go even further beyond" and that rock music started, my jaw dropped at the final result. Admittedly, it did kind of look like basically a SS Raditz and I didn't love the hairless "Piccolo brows". Regardless, it is hands down the most intense transformation I've seen in the franchise (2nd most intense being Legendary SS Broly).

    6) False super saiyan (Lord Slug)- This is in my top five favorite Dragonball movies for that scene alone. The soundtrack added some fun memories throughout, including the opening beat to "Stupify" blasting the second a weakened Goku catches Slug's fist before firing up. I liked the concept and theorized in my head-canon that this was what SS would look like if you unlocked the power multiplier before advancing enough to fully activate the form (Hence, why it dissipated after Goku regained control of himself). In any case, it was one of Goku's most bad-ass moments with some epic music.

    7) Goku heals the bird (Cooler's Revenge)- This is a beautiful moment showcasing Goku's love for Earth & nature as he handles this poor, tiny injured bird so gently despite being in a form triggered by rage. When Cooler threatened to erase the planet, and Goku was too beaten up to fight back, this innocent animal that likely doesn't even understand what's happening looks as helpless as he does. All he can think about in this moment is how his friends have done nothing to deserve this and he can't stand the thought of his home sharing in such an unfair fate. Then, it happens. The dub music is quiet and serene, complementing the mood of Goku now being at a higher level (especially when his hand glows from giving energy to the bird before it perks up and flies away). All of this illustrates that, even in anger, a saiyan's power can do more than just fight and kill. They aren't pure destruction.

    8) "So, the super saiyan has finally decided to show himself" (The Return of Cooler)- This was my introduction to Mark Menza's super saiyan theme, and it's almost angelic. Goku transforming with the glow to his hair highlighted is so awesome, almost like a flashing warning similar to a bee's. Up until this movie, going super saiyan had been presented as essentially an instant one-up on villains. This time, however, there's an underlying unease as Meta-Cooler is unfazed and remains confident. What one may initially perceive as "Oh yeah, it's over now!" looks more like it may be the hero's last stand.

    9) Super saiyan trio (Super Android 13)- This is mostly a nostalgic choice, but I was so excited at this as a kid because I'd never seen three super saiyans together before (This was before I'd watched DBZ through the Cell Games, which had four super saiyans). The techno-sounding remix of Mark Menza's theme made it that much more awesome, as Vegeta, Trunks, and Goku fired up one by one until that cool wide shot (from Krillin & Gohan's POV) of their three auras flaming in the distance. Remember how MCU fans felt at The Avengers' iconic "Assemble" moment? This felt like THAT for me with DBZ.

    10) Future Trunks debuts his super saiyan form against Mecha-Frieza & King Cold- Another big nostalgic memory. This was the first super saiyan to appear after Goku. I thought for sure at the time that Gohan or Vegeta would be the next ones (after Vegeta became a good guy, as I assumed back then). Then, this silver-haired sword-wielding teen shows up out of nowhere and easily wipes out essentially TWO Friezas! I remember seeing commercials for Trunks with Bruce Faulconer's "Mysterious Youth" theme before watching his debut episode, which built some mystique to the character. Needless to say, as much as he was done wrong in Super, I still love this super saiyan samurai!

Honorable mentions (Some were EXTREMELY difficult to decide on which got top spots):

Broly explodes (Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan)- This transformation genuinely scared me a little when I first saw it as a kid, mainly due to the suspense & intensity. Having seen Broly's image on the VHS cover, I knew what his final form would look like but had no idea when or how he'd reach it. The buildup to how powerful this "Legendary Super Saiyan" was supposed to be + how much time was spent waiting for him to go all out made the payoff that much greater. When he first went SS (with that strange blue hair, which I'm convinced influenced Toriyama's idea for SS Blue even if he didn't plan that), young me thought "Is that it? Doesn't he get bigger? Does his hair change again?" Seeing his energy change the environment's color, his eyes go green, and his skin tear as the monster literally exploded out of him like a butterfly cocoon, the final result left me initially speechless.

Every transformation scene (Dragonball Super: Broly)- I couldn't decide on a favorite here, because the animation throughout is just so beautiful. I don't know what else to say, it's all breathtaking.

Future Gohan debuts his super saiyan form against Future #17- Apart from this being my first time seeing any version of Gohan as a super saiyan (At first, I imagined his SS hair looking more like Goku's), I also liked how he spreads his hands out as the aura ignites. It reminds me of a bird spreading its wings to look more intimidating, very majestic but also like a "Come at me, bro!" to #17.

Future Trunks turns super saiyan against Tien (Bojack Unbound)- I always interpreted this as an homage to when Trunks saw Gohan transform at the Super World amusement park, as he spreads his hands out almost the exact same way. I doubt that's what the writers were thinking, but still liked the idea of the student imitating his master after having long since surpassed Future Gohan in strength.

Gohan turns super saiyan against Bojack's crew (Bojack Unbound)- I liked the slow build of the dub music as well as how confident Gohan looks in this moment despite his concern for Krillin, Tien and Yamcha. Even though he's intimidated at Bojack's energy, he doesn't back down or show any fear. Wearing his dad's colors is a nice touch too, as he nonchalantly says "Let's go." and turns up the heat. This scene builds anticipation very well, as Bojack's goons all notice Gohan's drastic power increase but aren't worried at all. Their demeanor is more like "Hmm, this might be entertaining for us after all."

Goku unlocks super saiyan 4 (Baby Saga)- While I don't like everything about the design itself (Ex- The red rings around the eyes), this payoff for Pan helping Goku regain his wits when he shrinks down from the Golden Great Ape is indisputable bad-assery at its finest. Seeing some version of adult Goku just to hear Sean's voice again was also nice, since hearing Kid Goku always reminds me of young Gohan. Lastly, it's sweet when Goku smiles (confirming he's himself) and hugs his granddaughter.

(Note: I know my picks & tastes may change over time. Hence, the title CURRENT Top 10) 😉

Why do fans still call Beerus 'Bills'?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:18 AM PST

Like come on, Battle of Gods was released 7 years ago - surely they're only doing it ironically? Bills was a mistranslation for BOG and was corrected not long after. Beerus is his official name used in all media.

And it is not a Kuririn/Krillin situation where the mistranslation stuck as the official English name - Beerus is the true original name and is derived from 'Beer' as all Gods of Destruction are named after alcoholic beverages.

Is there something I'm just not getting?

Edit: Ah ok so that's still his name in Latin American versions. My apologies.

Should I go back and watch episodes 6-46 of Super?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:01 PM PST

I remember stopping specifically on the episode where Beerus and Goku were fighting on King Kai's planet and it had the terrible animation. I skipped to episode 47 when I heard that they were finally getting into the Future Trunks arc. I read the Universe 6&7 tournament arc in the manga. Is it worth going back and watching all of these episodes or nah? I've actually just been planning to watch the original Dragon Ball since I've never seen it.

Piccolo is not gohans father and is not more of a dad to gohan than goku

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:24 PM PST

Piccolo trained gohan for a year thats it Goku raised goku from 1-5 and 7-11 then was absent from 11-18 so people wouldn't attack earth which worked until the buu saga he sacrificed himself to give gohan 7 years of normalcy in which piccolo didn't help gohan also before you bring up super watching someones kids doesn't make you more of a father figure.Piccolo is more of an uncle type figure to gohan.Im posting this just because i want to and needed somewhere to store my thoughts on this subject.
