I'd rather see Goten and Trunks fight individually rather than as Gotenks

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 08:02 AM PST

Am I the only one who thinks Gotenks is really fucking annoying? Maybe a slightly older Gotenks in the new movie would change that, but still. Plus I'm sick of Goten and Trunks needing to fuse in literally every confrontation they're in, especially when it's just to get pushed to the side like every other side character.

Reviewing every Dragon Ball Z movie until DBS: Super Hero comes out. Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone (Movie 1)

Reviewing every Dragon Ball Z movie until DBS: Super Hero comes out. Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone (Movie 1)

Since DBS: Super Hero is coming in about 2 months time I figured that, to get some of the hype going, I'd watch, and review, every single DBZ movie to have come out, in chronological order. My standpoint is from someone who has been exposed to and in love with the series ever since I was a toddler, yet I've not watched most of the movies, so this is a blind react.

Hopefully my journey leads to some of you joining in as well, as chiming in with your opinions. Let's do this!

    Synopsis

DBZ: Dead Zone is the first Dragon Ball Z movie, acting as a prelude to the series with the former name. After the events of the 23rd World Tournament, Piccolo is seen training as he gets ambushed and attacked by unknown foes. Shortly after, as Gohan, Chi-Chi and Ox-King enjoy a peaceful family moment, both father and daughter get attacked by these same mystery men, who's faces are finally shown. In a mission to collect the 7 Dragon Balls, these 3 enemies chase after Gohan, eventually kidnapping him, before Goku even has a chance at arriving at the scene.

These 3 foes are shown to be working for someone named Garlick Jr., who has the ambition of collecting all of the dragon balls to grant himself immortality, having gathered 5 so far.

Goku learns that they are after the Dragon Balls and sets off with Bulma's radar to the location of where all 5 are. In the meanwhile, Garlick's minions have collected the remaining 2, and Garlick Jr. wishes for immortality before Goku gets to his castle.

As he arrives, Goku finds himself outnumbered in the search for his son, when Kami appears to fight alongside him. Kami exposes Garlick Jr's motivation of avenging his father, who had lost out on being Guardian of the Earth to Kami himself. Goku fights off the 3 henchmen, while Kami fights Garlick.

As both Krillin and Piccolo arrive at the scene, evening the numbers, the Z warriors start to have an advantage, with all three henchmen being killed by Piccolo and Goku, even though Kami is being defeated by Garlick.

Goku and Piccolo join Kami, as he almost sacrifices himself, to fight off the enemy and he obtains a much bigger and muscular form, to which both Goku or Piccolo are barely match for, thinking they killed him off before dueling themselves. Suddenly the main villain erupts from the wreckage and opens the Dead Zone, which is essentially a locked portal of nothingness.

The crew all start getting sucked in, along with Garlick's castle, when Gohan reveals himself and pushes his power level immensly, knocking everyone, including Garlick Jr., who gets sucked into the Dead Zone, before it's shut off. Gohan is unaware of having been himself defeating Garlick, as Goku, Krillin, Kami and himself flee the scene, with Piccolo promising to fight Goku another day.

    Review

    Introduction

The movie, while entertaining enough, is short and does not have a very complex plot, serving clearly as an appetizer to what would come in DBZ. It still manages to have a cool little story, which has both a few good and bad things.

    THE GOOD

While I'm personally not the biggest fan of early DBZ character designs, I can for sure appreciate how good and consistent they look with the art style of the time, having also some cool shots, like the scene where Gohan meets the villiains in his home, or the scene where Garlick is holding Kami over a cliff. Despite it being a bit dated now, I can appreciate it for what it was.

Story wise, again, i's pretty simple but it works. The villain wants to be immortal to avenge someone, Gohan gets kidnapped (common theme at the start of DBZ) and Goku helps save the day, while we discover Gohan's untapped potential, which for me is a very big plus, as a Gohan fan.

As a the final 2 positives, the villain's motivations are pretty good, and quickly exposed in an organic and non-boring manner by Kami, which is always welcome, as well as his character design being good. The fighting scenes are short, which I dislike, but well excuted for the time and pretty entertaining too.

    THE BAD

First things first, the pacing of the movie is abysmal, with the viewer being shoved into the action 5 seconds in with no context or intro, which I don't think works well for any movie, especially this one. This, combined with its miniscule 40 minute run time, lead to some problems, like the Garlick fight being incredibly short and some throwaway jokes, like Gohan getting drunk, taking too long.

Secondly, while Garlick Jr is a good compelling character, his sidekicks are forgettable at best and miserable at worst. They serve little purpose to the plot, being only a way to kidnap Gohan, collect the Dragon Balls (both of which Garlick could've done by himself) and outnumbering the good guys. The designs are not even particularly good, nor are they strong enough to put up a fun fight.

Finally, I dislike some of the "ass pulls" and corner cuts they did, like the bad guys suddenly collecting 2 Dragon Balls while Goku is on his way, yet Krillin and Piccolo get there (out of nowhere, by the way) incredibly fast, just for plot. It also confused me why Krillin disappears during the main act, and only return when they are getting sucked into the Dead Zone.

    CONCLUSION

All in all it's a pretty good movie, and it kicks off the movie universe of DBZ well enough, and while i do have some problems with it, it didn't affect my enjoyement of it that much

    Pacing: 2/10

    Animation and Drawing: 7/10

    Story: 6/10

    Villain: 6/10

    Finale: 8/10

    Enjoyement: 7/10

    Final Rating: 6.5/10

Feel free to drop any suggestions and if you want to see more of this.

If you do, also let me know if I should change something around, like putting the synopsis at the end, or deleting it altogether, and creating new rating categories.

That´s all for now, hope you enjoyed it!

Gotenks VS Troten VS Buu This is a WHAT IF scenario I drew where instead of the Metamoran Fusion Dance performed, they used the Potara Earrings. This of course implies that they have knowledge of the earrings effect of lasting forever in Dragon Ball Z and not the knowledge given to us in DBS

My head canon is that Whis lied about taking Trunks to a duplicate timeline, instead he took Trunks and Mai to Chronoa to make him time patrol trunks.

Through these cards to sponsor the film you can see from the aura that Goku and Vegeta use the UI and the UE, so maybe in training they will show these techniques on the planet of Lord Beerus

Budokai Tenkaichi 3 Wii vs PS2

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 06:00 PM PST

So, after years of trying to hunt down Tenkaichi 3 on PS2, I've given up. I don't have a ton of expendable income so I've never purchased a PS2 version. Just bit the bullet on a copy for the Wii though, and I've some questions.

First of all, are there any noticeable differences? Aside from the control scheme, I'm expecting a pretty 1:1 experience. I'm assuming the Wii version will look a bit nicer and maybe run slightly smoother, but that's about it. Also, regarding the GameCube controller, which is definitely how I'll be playing, how well does it hold up in comparison to the PS2 controller? I've sunken hundreds of hours in Tenkaichi 2 on PS2 and I'm quite familiar with the controls. Will it be super alien on a GameCube controller or only take a few rounds to adjust? I'm completely comfortable with the GameCube controller layout.

One day, I'll get my hands on a PS2 copy for my collection, as it already has a place waiting for it, but for now, I'm finally ready to enjoy this game proper after a decade and a half.
