rewatching some DBZ movies this weekend

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 07:12 PM PST

I haven't watched these since VHS when I was 5ish. started with Deadzone and just want to say DBZ is just as bad ass as I remember it..Even with lengthy scenes haha. 80-90s artwork kills it! makes me think a lot of anime viewers in the who only got into anime when it became popular recently, are missing out haha

Regarding the Goku is a bad dad meme

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 02:51 PM PST

People who still to this day say Goku is a bad dad fail to realize the only times Goku died in the series was to protect/save his son.

How I think DBS Super Hero is going to go down.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 03:28 PM PST

Obviously we know Gohan fights the two new androids. I have a feeling that Gohan is going to tell Pan to hide while him and Piccolo fight the androids. I think it's going to be pretty one sided favoring Gohan and Piccolo which in a last second effort the Androids are going to fuse together somehow (probably the same way all the robots from that one universe in the TOP did) and look very similar to Perfect Cell causing flashbacks and little bit of PTSD for Gohan. Then the fight is going to go the other way causing Piccolo to get seriously hurt or potentially killed. Then Gohan will get his ass kicked and basically be beaten down unable to fight. With let's call him Cell 2 laughing at how "pathetic" or "weak" he is. Since Pan has been hiding the whole time she's going to step in and say to leave her Dad alone or something along the lines of he's not pathetic he's a "Super Hero" or my hero etc. Shes going to charge up a Kahmehameha blast to protect Gohan and obviously Cell 2 will send one back toying with her creating a wave similar to Gohan and Cells. This is going to light a fire under Gohans ass to protect his family and he's going to get up next to her and fire his own Kahmehameha wave creating the father daughter Kahmehameha.

Let me know what you think!

TLDR The Androids fuse and look like Cell causing Gohan and Pan to recreate The Father Son Kahmehameha

Which characters would you like to see return to the spotlight?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 10:08 PM PST

Thanks in large part to power creep, a lot of characters who aren't Goku and Vegeta tend to be shoved to the sidelines. But recently this trend has started to be averted with the Tournament of Power. Android 18, who spent most of her time after the Cell Saga as an extra, was a member of the team representing Universe 7. Perhaps even more notable is the inclusion of Android 17, who never had any appearances before Super aside from a cameo at the end of the Kid Buu Saga.

So which other characters do you want to make a return to prominence?

Best or worst differences between the DB/DBZ manga and the anime(s)?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 08:03 PM PST

I gave the DBS manga series a try starting with the Moro arc and I've really enjoyed it so far. I noticed some people in this sub suggested reading the TOP arc since it differs from the anime, and I'm glad I did because I ended up preferring it over the anime.

I'm wondering if the same goes for any points throughout the DB/DBZ manga? I'm aware of filler episodes, but I'm more curious if there were any notable differences, good or bad, between the manga and anime that stand out in the DB/DBZ story.

How would you rank the main villains/antagonists of each DBZ and Super main arc?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 11:14 PM PST

Rank them by how good they was as an antagonist not by how good they are as a character or how much you like the character. If that was the case I would put cell at #1 but as an actual villain he's basically frieza-lite.

    Anyway, here's my list:

    1 - Frieza(Self explanatory)

2 - Majin Buu(I'm going to get shat on but idc, he worked incredibly well as an uncontrollable force of chaos and is a very dark and complex villain)

3 - Vegeta(It's hard to believe he's even the same person that he is in super or even like 2 arcs later.)

4 - Cell(Like I said, he is Frieza-lite but then again Frieza is the GOAT so the apple cant fall far from the tree. He could have been portrayed as being more of a threat imo. He only really got to shine against Vegeta and trunks who are jobbers anyway)

    5 - Beerus(Great villain but can't compare to Z villains.)

6 - Jiren(He doesn't have much of a character beyond being really fucking strong. But at least he is a massive threat because of that which is why he isn't lower).

7 - Goku Black(I wouldn't say he's a bad villain but just not as good as the others. He doesn't pose much of a threat by himself and even counting Zamasu still they weren't that memorable compared to other villains. Merged Zamasu looked imposing until Vegito Blue handed his ass back to him and then his body started tearing down. Like I don't remember him even beating Goku once. Vegeta got beat by him but then ends up kicking his ass later on anyway. Like I said, he's a good antagonist but just not as good as the others.)

Funimation Streaming all Dragon Box footage now.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 03:47 AM PST

Funimation Streaming all Dragon Box footage now.

Great news! The streaming footage for DBZ no longer looks like crap. Funimation has switched over from the horrendous, cropped, oversaturated Orange Bricks footage to the much more pristine Dragon Boxes that were sourced directly from the original film prints by Toie.

So if you want to experience the show via streaming it is no longer a terrible option and it beats out any home release done in-house by Funimation. It wasn't a perfect release as no color correction was done and the colors have warped a bit, but it no longer looks like an eye-searing overblown mess like the Orange Bricks were. Sadly Next Episode Previews were cut entirely, presumably because the English dub only ever had a limited amount of those during the broadcast and not the full series. So they didn't want to have a separate video track for the JP version.

    4:3

    Respectable colors

The visible natural grain and no detail loss.

Thank you, Funimation for doing at least something right with this series.

EDIT: Seems to be available for the JP version only.

When someone transfers there ki does it just replenish their own or does it give them a power up?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 03:30 PM PST

Like if Goku in his Super Sayian were to transfer some of his ki to Krillin would he then be relative to Super Sayian Goku? Or at least gain a significant boost in his power? Or is it only effective to replenish someone's lost ki?

So, for the most part, the story arcs of Dragon Ball Super are all about remixing the old non-canon movie villains and spinning them into actual canon, right?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 10:29 PM PST

Sans for the Tournament of Power arc and Battle of Gods, to me it seems that all arcs are just plucking the villains and some concepts from the old movies and giving them the canon treatment. Take note, I'm not disparaging the quality of the arcs, just listing some things that I have noticed:

    • It could be interpreted that Cooler and his fifth form got folded into Frost and Golden Freeza. Could still get a cooler reboot later on I guess, like Broly did after Kale.
    • Kale and Broly are obvious I suppose.
    • Cabba seems to be a reinterpretation of Tarble from Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return!
    • Zamasu/Black took the evil Goku look-a-like element from Tree of Might, the body steal element from World's Strongest, and actual dragon-granted immortality to a former apprentice of a Godly being from Dead Zone.
    • This one might be up for debate, but Moro may be seen as a complete reinvention of Lord Slug. Space faring mystical being. Has evil galactic recruits for henchmen. Really old. Seeks to restore his magic power/go younger to his prime. Goku fights him while using an unmastered state (pseudo Super Saiyan/Ultra instinct Sign). DBS Manga Spoilers After the newest Namekian lore additions in the manga, I don't think we're getting evil Namekians anymore. But I can always be wrong and Slug may get directly rebooted somehow.
    • The Granolah Arc currently seems to be reinventing the Bojack villains, in the form of the Heeters. The Moro Arc, at least the initial stages, could also be taken as a reinterpretation of the Bojack concept since both were galactic prisoners that were able to escape their prisons thanks to the defeat of a previous villain (Cell for Bojack, Buu for Moro).
    • Since the Red Ribbon is back for the 2022 movie I suppose a reinvention of Android 13 is up next, using the new Gamma 1 and 2 characters.

That would still leave Return of Cooler (Big Gete Star is a weird enough concept to stand-alone separate of Cooler), Fusion Reborn (canon Janemba please!), and Wrath of the Dragon left.

Do you think this is the case? Who would you want to see rebooted next?

A theory for why goten and trunks are still so small

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 10:14 PM PST

I have a few things that might attribute to this.

First, goku was like 14 when dragon ball starts (i think he was under the impression that he was 9 until he remembers how to count). And he was a little chonker for a while throu that show. Next, its canonical that the more you beat the crap out of a sayain, the stronger they become. Goku, gohan, and even vegeta got a bit taller after fighting stronger and stronger opponents. But goten and trunks don't have that same battle history. Yeah they train but I don't think anyone ever beat them down lime piccolo did gohan. Or everyone did goku before he gets stronger and comes back. And they mostly train with each other right? Now every detail i mentioned could be attributed to the writer just forgetting stuff and details not being canonical, but sometimes its fun to try and MAKE details make sense.

    Old Broly didn't remember Goku.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 09:39 AM PST

Back on Earth before they went to New Planet Vegeta, Vegeta called Goku, Kakarot, and Broly didn't even flip out.

In the English sub of the movie, when the mind control was bugging out, Paragus tried to give a reason for it.

He said that Goku's power was awakening Broly's saiyan instincts.

Paragus even said that them being born of the same day must have been destiny.

Meaning that the baby stuff was a metaphor.

This is in no way deep, but Dragon Ball isn't all that hard to understand in the first place.
