    Opinion : DBZ is actually quite underrated here because many don't read the manga

    So I'm a huge DBZ fan, and although I quite like DB Super, I always think it is far inferior to the even the weakest arc of DBZ, which I think (yes, not Buu Saga) but the original Saiyan saga with Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta.

    Whats surprised me is how many posts here in this sub is talking about how some of the arcs in DBS is the second best arc in the whole DB universe after Frieza. Seriously, WTF?

    I really think that it is because many of Americans started to follow DBZ with the anime, not the manga (unlike Japanese and Asians in general who started with the manga first), and the original anime is so much packed with fillers episodes that I honestly think it became garbage. And DB super anime actually is good in a sense that it has a nice pace similar to manga and not filled with filler episodes. Thats why I think many of non manga reader think DBS is as good as DBZ.

    I know my opinions might be controversial and many of you won't like it, but it is my take. I re-read DBZ manga and man, it so much, so much better than DBS manga.

    The First Super Saiyan Transformation

    Goku turning into a super Saiyan out of pure rage is still one of the most impactful things in the Dragon Ball franchise. The words "Super Saiyan" had been thrown around several times before Goku ever reached it, and it should be noted how obscure and foggy the meaning of Super Saiyan was at this point, from an Oozaru-like beast to just an unusually strong Saiyan.

    The first appearance of the Super Saiyan is notably completely tragic in origin. The entire Namek saga continues to build and build, until Goku, beaten and weary physically and mentally, dragged to hell and back, finally snaps, and turns into something completely new. All the pure anger and rage of a disheartened Goku coming on the outside. Gohan is clearly completely horrified to see Goku look like this, he knew Goku was not the same person anymore, and may never be.

    Freeza, secretly so afraid of the possibility, however slight, of a Super Saiyan actually existing, exterminates nearly all of the saiyans initially. And on Namek he attempts to pick off the last few, mocking as he does. Freeza pushes Goku, the last true member of an extinct species into becoming his worst nightmare, and showing that what he was afraid of the whole time was his own doing and downfall. Goku wasn't just fighting for his friends, his family, and his world anymore, but also for the legacy of an entire extinct race who had all met a gruesome and horrible fate.

    It's really too bad the concept of the Super Saiyan was completely ruined later in Z when everyone else started doing it and they started adding a whole bunch of stupid ascended versions, and it basically became a dick-waving contest of who could reach the next version first. And then literally seven year olds starting doing it and treating it like it's being able to tie your bloody shoes or something. A form that was originally born out of complete tragedy, witnessing complete horrors and pushing beyond the limits was turned into a children's plaything and basically just a title.

    Now it's completely ridiculous with Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue and all these other forms I can't keep up with anymore. Dragon Ball as a whole really went downhill after Namek.
