Why Goku Deserves Some Slack For Killing King Kai With Cell

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:48 PM PST

(Note: This should go without saying, but I'd appreciate any/all discourse being respectful of each other's opinions. Feedback's welcome, but I'll indulge NO insults or comment wars)

As much as fans love to criticize and/or poke fun at Goku (TFA is hilarious) for teleporting to King Kai's planet as Imperfect Cell self-destructed, that was logically his best & only option at the time:

    A) We must remember, Goku's instant transmission technique only allows him to visit places where he senses energy of a being he recognizes. He can't just zip anywhere he wants, all around the universe.

Back during the Cell saga, the only places he'd been to off-world where he could teleport were King Kai's planet, King Yemma/Enma's Otherworld check-in station, and New Planet Namek:

    B) As harsh as this is to admit, King Kai by comparison just wasn't as great of a loss. He's North Kai, one of four Kais tasked with overseeing the four quadrants of the universe, a job he still does just fine.

    C) Had Goku teleported Cell to King Yemma, killing him would bring chaos to Otherworld and realms beyond it. Even if he were revived shortly afterward, the damage in the meantime could still be great.

It would've likely ended up as a Fusion Reborn scenario, with the worlds of the living & dead having no barrier to separate them. Not to mention that, had Cell died, his soul could wreak havoc on Earth too.

    D) Obviously, had Goku teleported to New Namek, Cell would've killed the Namekians along with their dragon balls. Plus, those who were already killed by Frieza and his men couldn't be revived again.

    E) One defense is "Well, had Goku not wasted precious seconds saying goodbye to Gohan, maybe he could've teleported to King Kai, then teleported away with him, Gregory and Bubbles before the explosion".

Fair point. Had Goku immediately teleported away with Cell, without saying any goodbyes, it's possible he could've had time with his super-speed to save himself, King Kai, Gregory and Bubbles.

After all, Dragonball's never exactly been consistent with the concept of time (Ex- "Five minutes" until Old Namek explodes). Realistically, however, this is something most of us thought of in hindsight.

Goku may be a brilliant fighter, and his general intelligence about other things varies, but he's admittedly not the sharpest tool in the shed with common sense even in life-or-death scenarios.

Even Vegeta isn't always that smart, especially under pressure or when his saiyan pride outweighs logic. In the heat of the moment, Goku thought this through and figured he wouldn't have much time.

Cell was going to explode in less than a minute, and he spent a fair amount of that considering his options. He knew what a second death would mean, but resolved to sacrifice himself anyway.

He thought this was the end, so he just wanted to say goodbye to his friends & family. He cared about them, especially Gohan, and knew this would be their last chance to speak (until the Buu saga).

Objectively speaking, sure, maybe he didn't make all the right choices. But emotionally, can you blame him? Would any of us be clear-headed under those circumstances, with such heavy stakes?

Goku did the best he could under the circumstances, and he did it with the best intentions. Lastly, even if he'd successfully saved King Kai without anyone dying, Cell still would've regenerated.

    F) Had Goku brought King Kai, Gregory and Bubbles back with him to Earth just in time, Super Perfect Cell would've teleported to meet them there. Then, Goku would've likely been killed instead of Trunks.

No doubt, Cell would've made his first target the Z Fighter that thwarted his plans to destroy Earth and very nearly killed him (instead of just shooting a blast at the group and randomly hitting Trunks).

So yeah, Goku probably would've died again no matter what. Perhaps that was just his fate in this timeline, who knows? Regardless, can we cut him the tiniest bit of slack here?
