Toei and Bandai Financial Results: Dragon Ball makes around $1.25 billion in FY2020

    Posted: 30 May 2020 07:06 PM PDT

Toei Animation and Bandai Namco published their results for the final quarter of Fiscal Year 2020.3, which started in 1 January 2020 and ended in 31 March 2020.

    Highlights:

    • For Bandai, Dragon Ball made almost $450 million. It answered for 25% (!!!) of their total sales and was their biggest franchise by far. That's almost $70 million more in comparison with the same quarter of 2019. Just to give you an idea of what this means, as far as I know only Gundam has made more than $200 million in one quarter. It's so much money I had to triple check my numbers to believe it!

    • If you sum Bandai's sales on this fiscal year with Gundam, One Piece, Naruto and Precure... you only get the same as Dragon Ball's sales.

    • Even if you take away two of Dragon Ball's biggest assets (its huge international presence and powerful games series) and restrict only to the ultra-competitive Toys and Hobby segment in Japan, DB still surpasses One Piece, Naruto and Ultraman put together.

    • Even after Bandai had increased their fiscal year estimates for DB by about 70 million dollars, DB still surpassed them by more than $115 million.

    • For Toei, Dragon Ball made at least* $47 million on the last quarter, that is, about a third of their total revenue.

This quarter Dragon Ball recovered well some of the steam that it had lost since 2015, mostly on its merch and games side, represented by Bandai. Toei didn't see that increase nearly as much, perhaps because they have been out of content for so long that they don't get as much from Bandai's games and international sales?

Dragon Ball handily kept its place as the main revenue carrier for both companies. Just look at the percentage revenues from Bandai and Toei. Last quarter DB seemed in a decline, but you can see how insanely well Dragon Ball has done on the last quarter for Bandai and how much it dominates the two companies' results. In the meantime, One Piece has declined significantly after its movie's impact ended, showing that the revenue increase of the last quarters just wasn't sustainable. Poor Luffy...

You can also look at the revenue graphs from Bandai and Toei. Again, utterly insane quarter for Bandai, probably pulled by games and international revenue, with Toei seeing lower increases but still going strong, contradicting my early theories that we were seeing a permanent decline.

    * Toei doesn't completely break down their financial performance by franchise: any Japanese revenues from movie tickets, streaming rights, DVD sales and such (what they call "Domestic Film Revenue", but is more like a "Domestic Productions Revenue") are unknown.

This is kinda a throwaway post but what IS Emperor Pilaf?

I really hope after Moro is inevitably defeated, they bring back Shadow Dragons as a consequence of Overuse of Dragon Balls and make them a multiverse level threat (that way we can explore the other universes)

    Posted: 30 May 2020 03:28 PM PDT

or imagine them spawning from the damaged Super Dragon Balls which Zamasu broke in his timeline, causing the negative energy to release

also SSJ4 via Broly because he already has the Prototype

Actually, GT sagas could work great in Super, imagine ending the series with a Goku farewell on Shenron

If Goku fighting Zamasu resulted in the appearance of Goku Black, how did Goku Black appear before Goku even fought Zamasu?

    Posted: 30 May 2020 01:38 PM PDT

Goku fought Zamasu cause Goku Black had appeared so how did Goku Black come to be in the first place?

I'm very confused with the timeline.

    Posted: 30 May 2020 06:22 PM PDT

So, before super I thought the logical order was dragon ball, dbz, gt.

Now that I'm watching super (haven't finished yet) this is set right after the buu saga. So technically goku can be ssjg in gt? But then I also read online and apparently gt is no longer Canon? And then I also read in a older post on this sub that the bardock movie is no longer Canon?

I also discovered another show called super dragon ball heroes that is a spin-off but happens after super, so is it Canon?

Why is mai a old lady on gt? And trunks is young?

The majority consensus is that Broly is now one of the team, but Frieza still has hope of using him down the line- does his plan hold water?

    Posted: 30 May 2020 02:47 PM PDT

Everyone at the end of the movie seemed to leave with the notion that Goku now has a new Bro(ly) in another part of the universe, and fan arts of their potential adventures later started to crop up.

However, Frieza didn't seem all that disheartened at his failure on Earth, and if you still remember, at the end of the movie he seemed confident that he can go back for Broly later down the line and still harness his power. Clearly they added that for a reason (well at least most likely), as otherwise they could have left off with Frieza admitting that the plan went awry blah blah dirty monkey, indicating Toei has plans to continue this plot point.

The only problem is, Frieza tremendously messed up by leaving Broly to assume he killed his father, and not knowing that Goku went and made friends with Broly. Cheelai wasn't all that warmed up to Goku, but Broly and Lemo seemed pretty alright with him at least, and plus none of them have any affiliation with Frieza force anymore.

I'm curious what you all think? Can this plot thread go anywhere? Perhaps Broly could still have resentment to Vegeta for trying to Old Yeller him, and perhaps it's worth while considering that Broly doesn't know that Gogeta (the one who beat him back to sense and tried to kill him) is Goku and Vegeta; he didn't see them fuse/defuse and was going berserk when they explained the technique.

    Buu makes no sense

    Posted: 30 May 2020 08:40 AM PDT

I just finished the episode where they defeat Kid buu and him and majin buu make no sense at all. So kid buu was turned to fat buu because he absorbed that fat kai right? So how is it exactly that those 2 are seperate now? At the start it made some sense, the good part of buu and the evil part got seperated and then the evil part absorbed the good part and they became one but more evil than good. But then he turned into his initial form, so how is it that the fat buu, which should be kid buu + fat kai, exists alone? Care to explain?
