    The Sideman Narrative Disappearing?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 06:22 PM PDT

We have had Krillin, Piccolo and Vegeta all as the side man character to Goku throughout Dragonball. Vegeta seems to be firmly implanted into that position for the longest time. However with the Moro arc it seems like there may be a possibility of Vegeta becoming something more than a sideman. Vegeta could become Gokus equal albeit in a different manner. Vegeta would no longer be the fall guy but rather seen as one of the two top characters to actually win a main battle. It may not end up being the Goku show after all.

We saw glimpses of this at the Tournament Of Power when while Goku, Frieza and 17 teamed up to defeat Jiren and it was Goku and Frieza that eliminated him it was 17 who ultimately came out victorious. Many would even agree that 17 was the MVP of the tournament. However this gave us a tiny look into battles that were Goku wasn't the final person left standing. The main character wasn't given that honour. Even if we go back a bit more Future Trunks had defeated Zamasu where Goku and Vegeta had failed. Of course Zamasu came back and Zeno was the one to erase him but they were teases of a slight narrative shift where Goku doesn't always be the last person standing.

There was a true to form moment prior to the ending of the TOP where Vegeta took the fall for Goku to possibly be the last line of defence however it very quickly shifted when 17 and Freeza showed up. Things weren't playing out the predictable way of the strongest character besting his opponent after the sideman took the fall. Even now with Moro Vegeta doesn't feel like he's the fall guy for Goku. It feels like a role reversal. While this could indeed be a bluff.. Is it time to start treating Dragonball less like the Goku show and more like the franchise that it is. People are invested in all the characters so any one of them could win at any given time?

If Vegeta is the one to defeat Moro to me that takes away from him being that sideman character. We are slowly transitioning into Dragonball being more focused on the branding and cast of characters as a whole rather than Goku. This may further get hazy if Broly ever returns. There you would have 3 popular and immensely powerful Saiyans. If Broly comes to the side of good do you think that people are just going to accept him as a sideman? A Goku fall guy? To me the addition of Broly would cement that there would be massive changes in the focal point of the show.

No longer would it be "well these guys all got beat.. Well there goes Vegeta... Looks like its up to Goku.." instead we will have gotten to a place where Goku could become the fall guy for someone else because anyone can come out on top. I honestly don't know how fans would receive that change if it were to happen. For so long it's been engraved into our minds that Goku is going to win this thing. They tried with Gohan against Cell back in Z and in the end people for some reason soured on Gohan quickly. He fell back in line.

Is "LOL Goku saves the day" forever going to be the narrative that we are stuck with or would you as a fan of Dragonball be more than happy to watch a show with interchangeable winning characters. Goku falls.. Broly wins.. Broly falls... Vegeta wins.. I feel like it would add more unpredictability to the show and keep it even more fresh.

Dragon Ball characters d&d classes. (Pilaf Saga)

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 05:56 PM PDT

Hey guys. So recently I started rewatching Dragon Ball, the original series. Now mind you, I haven't watched that show since I was a little baby, so while I know the general stuff, I'm viewing this as a new experience. I'm also a player of d&d, so once I finished the Pilaf Saga, I thought it could be a fun thing to put the main 5 characters into d&d classes, and I'd like to hear your opinions, because obviously they don't line up 100% so there's a lot of subjective opinions going into this.

•So first of all, let's start with Goku. Goku is definitely a monk, that's the easy one. Monk in general is very dragon ball, so most characters could easily fit into this... and there's nothing more Dragon Ball than Goku himself, his primary ability is his martial arts, and his pole is definitely a monk weapon.

•Next is Bulma. I'd say Bulma is Artificer, even tho she doesn't show most of her engineering skills in this saga, she is always handy with her Dynocaps, and that's a good start.

•Yamcha has monk skills, as I said martial arts is the primary thing in dragon ball so most characters, especially fighters fit into monk. But he's also a thief and a sneaky bastard. So he'd be a Rogue/monk multiclass

•Next let's talk about Puar. Oolong and Puar are both shapeshifters, and they both studied for it in a school, so I'd say that's pretty wizard... and the shape shifting ability does seem to line up mostly with school of illusions. So they'd be illusion wizards imo. But Puar is also sneaky and a thief with Yamcha, so he'd be illusion wizard/rogue multiclass

•As I said before, Oolong along with Puar are probably illusion wizard with their shapeshifting ability. But while Puar had some rogue skills, Oolong seems more of a pure illusion wizard since I don't think he has anything else going on for him.

So yea that's my list. I didn't do it for anyone but the main five, but mostly because I wrote this at 4 am and don't wanna think very much about it. Again, lemme know what you think, and if there are any adjustments you could think of. Have a good day folks!

Unpopular opinion: Gohan is a bland character compare to Goku.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 08:31 AM PDT

Goku manages to make new friends even if some of them were his enemy.

Except Piccolo, Gohan doesn't have any friends.

Most of dragon ball sagas happend because of Goku:

Radizt happend because he wants to see Goku.

Android and Cell saga happend Dr Gero wants to have revenge on Goku.

Beerus saga happend because he hears Goku managed to defeat Frieza.

Golden Frieza happend because he want to defeat Goku.

Universe 6 and ToP saga happend because Goku suggests to have a tournament.

Zamasu saga happend because Goku challenge Zamasu.

Gohan doesn't do anything to drive the plot.

Goku loves fighting and because of that he would like see more worlds in order to find someone to fight. More worlds to visit, more story.

Gohan is just someone with superpower but choose to stay on Earth and do normal thing. He doesn't have any motivation to go outside unless it is dangerous to the Earth.

are the dragon ball z what ifs getting a little crazy for you?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 06:06 AM PDT

at first i saw videos with reasonable changes.

things like gohan being born female which was a 50/50 chance of happening, humans using the time chamber before the saiyan saga, vegito staying fused which was resaonable before they retconned it.

now i see videos like the ginyus turning good, goku becoming majin, cell being good and the androids reprogrammed. it went from what if's to full on fanfiction.

Are there any villains you think should of been beaten by somebody else?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 02:25 PM PDT

I was thinking what if each hero only had 1 major win under their belt. So basically what if Goku wasn't the saviour all the time (save gohan/cell)

As I watch the series I always think someone else is going to get the final blow in. I thought Vegeta was going to beat Hit/Golden Frieza or Trunks was going to beat Zamasu. So I thought I'd make a list of heroes I think could of beaten certain major villains.

    Vegeta - no one won

    Frieza - Goku

    Cell - Future Trunks

    Buu - Gotenks

    Beerus - no one won

    Golden Frieza - Vegeta

    Hit - Piccolo

Zamasu - Zeno (no one won)

    Jiren - Gohan

Do you think someone else should of beaten a particular villain?
