Unpopular Opinion: Why I Believe Toriyama Should Have Ended Dragonball Z At Cell

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 08:43 PM PST

(Note- Feedback is welcome, but I'd appreciate keeping it constructive and respecting each other's preferences. I will always respect & admire Toriyama, but being a fan does NOT mean we have to agree with every decision he made or the circumstances under which they happened)

In my opinion, the Cell saga was a near-perfect ending to signify the end of an era: Gohan surpassing Goku, Goku dying but his son avenging him + being trusted to protect Earth in his absence, and Trunks returning to his future before successfully bringing peace after years of suffering. If we apply George Lucas' analogy of "It's like poetry, it rhymes." (It's a sound concept even if his execution of it divided fans), then this could have arguably been more poetic when we treat the series as stanzas.

The original Dragonball was the story of Goku's youth, as he gradually surpassed all his mentors from Roshi to Kami, establishing himself as Earth's strongest hero. DBZ was both the story of Goku's adulthood as his continued exploits attracted new threats from beyond Earth and the story of his son maturing in his father's shadow until the torch was finally passed to him. Just as Z Began with Goku sacrificing himself to save Gohan & Earth, it would end with his similar sacrifice at the Cell Game.

Thus, the stage would be set for the third stanza of the next generation in a new series continuing from where Z left off (Ex- GT). This would still be first-and-foremost GOKU'S story, but Gohan would be established as the first main lead of the new blood on Earth. Basically, Gohan would NOT replace his dad as the hero. The two would merely share the spotlight more as peers in a dynamic where one could just as plausibly surpass the other at any time (Vegeta would still share in this dynamic too).

Everything from sagas beyond Cell (Great Saiyaman, Supreme Kai, Majin Buu, fusion, Battle of Gods, Resurrection F, etc) could still happen. They'd simply occur within this sequel or "next gen" series that carries on the Dragonball name. This is honestly rather common in popular properties today, especially in long established manga or anime (Ex- Boruto, Yashahime, every subsequent Yu-Gi-Oh series). The franchise would still expand the universe and lore to allow for new characters and events.

Gohan would spend most of his time on Earth, balancing making time to train (Ex- Visiting Piccolo at Dende's lookout) with trying to lead a more peaceful, semi-normal existence. Here is where the slice-of-life humor gets more emphasis in between battles as we see the gang living their lives like much of what's on display in Super. Meanwhile, Goku goes on his own adventures in Otherworld which serves as the flip side of the coin to the grander world, gaining opportunities he'd never have gotten in life.

Much like Z's filler with Pikkon, he'd meet deceased warriors who initially outclass him and learn new techniques from them, explore new areas of the afterlife, and continue pushing himself to be the strongest like always. He could even join a task force created by Enma composed of legendary fighters who were permitted to keep their bodies, helping to keep order in Otherworld by facing new villains & supernatural threats that could also potentially affect Earth (kind of like Fusion Reborn's premise).

Somewhere down the line, a method could have been found for Goku to return to Earth (at least for limited periods) when the Z Fighters needed his help or he possibly needed help with a problem in Otherworld. He wouldn't be fully revived again, but would no longer be dead either. Ex- Old Kai can't give him his life, but could make him into a Supreme Kai, thereby changing him into something higher than a mortal like the other Supreme Kai. He could still be killed, but wouldn't be like he was before.

Goku's activity within this higher plane of existence would naturally attract the attention of gods and such, and things would escalate from there. This could all have made the playground of this franchise's continuity bigger, and Toriyama could have worked toward it on his own terms since he'd no longer have been burdened with finishing Z first. He could have taken more time off to recharge, returned when he was ready, and paced himself better. Quoting Peridot, "It could have been GREAT!"

It's no secret to the fandom today that Toriyama was very often stressed during the original manga's serialization, particularly its latter half of drawing/writing Z alongside production of the anime. He's discussed before how he wanted to end Z at multiple points, partially because the job was growing progressively less fun for him as the brand's popularity skyrocketed and expectations grew. He initially didn't even want to do the Buu arc, only changing his mind afterward, and it shows in his writing.

Two pretty obvious reasons behind his return for another saga were: A) Money talks, as Dragonball was still hugely beloved and therefore profitable. Toriyama's an artist, but also a businessman. B) Unsurprisingly, Goku's 2nd death led to major backlash because he's the most marketable character and the majority of fans couldn't bear to let him go. Hence, Toriyama course-corrected with a return to the more comedy-driven storytelling Dragonball was originally known for alongside the action.

Consequently, this rush to begin the series' final stretch created a working environment where a creator who'd previously enjoyed his work was becoming more mechanical. Even as a kid reading the manga and watching the anime for the first time (who was already familiar with the original Dragonball and no stranger to the comedy), it was immediately noticeable that something felt "off" in the Buu arc. I can't put it into words exactly, but the passion came off as somehow diluted.

The longer it went on, the more apparent it became that Toriyama just wanted it to be over. And when your audience is able to get a sense of that through your storytelling, that's DEFINITELY a red flag. Unfortunately, this is a tale as old as time, not just for manga or anime creators but influential storytellers in general historically. This man was clearly overworked and overextended himself, which caused the enthusiasm and heart that once carried through his work to slowly dwindle.

It didn't burn out, it was just running on fumes. That's the first step toward stagnation, which is all the more reason Toriyama could have benefitted from just letting Z close with Cell. Gero's androids & Cell were arguably the "perfect" antagonists to end that period, as it all tied back into the first series with the showstopper being an amalgamation of the past strongest heroes & villains' DNA. Frieza was also a natural progression after the saiyans established the existence of aliens + a boss they served.

Majin Buu and by extension the story surrounding him felt like new territory altogether that signaled a drastic shift for the franchise worthy of being the opening act for a new series, much like Demon King Piccolo & Piccolo Jr. signaled the turning point where the original Dragonball was growing to a new level that set up Z. If Toriyama had just stepped back, taken all the time he needed, and stuck to his guns on letting Gohan take the lead for a short time, I believe it would have been worth the wait.

Okay, rant over, apologies for the length. Comment below, do you agree or disagree?

    Master Roshi Vs androids?

Master roshi was at one point one of the strongest fighters on earth. Did he not attempt to fight the androids in the history of trunks movie or in that timeline? If not, then why?

ok, i know that you need 6 saiyan for the ritual, but could any sort of cloning count as different saiyans?

because that would be interesting for any reincarnation story in dbz
