RIP Shunsuke Kikuchi, the composer of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z's original OST

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 11:55 PM PDT

Oricon announced today that Shunsuke Kikuchi, legendary music composer, died at 89 from aspiration pneumonia.

Shunsuke Kikuchi started his career in 1961 and since then he produced music for countless TV shows and movies, encompassing franchises like Doraemon, Kamen Rider, Grendizer, Tiger Mask, Gamera, Dr. Slump, and of course Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. One of his songs was even used in Kill Bill!

His importance can be ascertained by the fact that, 24 years after Dragon Ball Z stopped airing, his DB/DBZ soundtrack won the 2019 prize for Japanese soundtrack with most revenues generated from international licenses.... and the third place was Grendizer, another Kikuchi soundtrack that aired decades earlier.

Dragon Ball Z: Buu Saga (Uncut Funimation Dub)

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:41 AM PDT

Underrated saga honestly in general; first time really watching it, just got to Old Kai. If anything, It seems like an attempt to go back from some of the heavy seriousness of the Cell Games to the Gag Manga roots of Dragon Ball. A lot of the fun and joy of the first few sagas of Dragon Ball is brought back, but with a dark undertone suiting the new gravity of the level of destruction fights at that point had gotten to. You see that evolve in two ways post-Z, with max seriousness floundering with GT, and a new formula on gravity mixed with fun with Super. Undoubtedly, if it weren't for the Buu Saga, Dragon Ball would be a dead universe today.

The Funimation Dub of Z available with the subscription trips A LOT in my opinion on some lines towards the middle of the series, starting to become more noticeable in the Frieza Saga, and especially on display during some points during the Cell Saga. However, in the Buu Saga, the source material made it more possible for the writers to hit what I call the "Writer's Stride," where familiarity with the created universe and characters allowed for more natural character interactions and less out of place dialogue. The analogy between the cat and lion with Old Kai where they have a direct audio rip of a lion roaring was hilarious, and in truth, I found myself genuinely giggling more than once an episode sometimes once the World Tournament started. It's in this saga where I've experienced most of that Dragon Ball nostalgia feeling I got while rewatching the Pilaf, Red Ribbon, and Piccolo Sagas, with a mixture of somewhat cynical humor coupled with world-ending consequences that continues into Super. In a way, the Buu Saga starts to create that macrocosmic subject scope that Super and GT seek to expand upon. The expansion on the Kai directly led to the expansion of the Gods in Super, and the concept of true universal threats and forces of nature directly brought about due to the actions of main characters is expanded in GT, although that trend could be said to have been accidentally started due to prodding by Toriyama's editors during the Android Saga.

I paused towards the end of episode 250 to type this little review, so if my opinions change by the end of the arc, or I have additional observations, I'll leave an edit addendum in the future.

    Dragon Ball action figures

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 01:16 PM PDT

So I recently started collecting the Dragon Stars action figures. I have SSB Goku, 1st form frieza, Future Trunks, Ssj Vageta and Ssj Gogeta. They are pretty cool, but they don't really hold up to the super battle collection figures I used to get in the 90's and early 2000's. The dragon stars are way more posable, but the old figures were cooler looking for display purposes and had removable tops also. What figures do you guys like? Which ones do you have? What's your favorite type of figures? Have you collected a lot of them?

What are some DB games that rely on gimics?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 04:34 PM PDT

I've always like the games that aren't so fighting focused like Super Dragon Ball Heroes World Mission and Dragon Ball Fusions, games that rely on a gimic to make them stand out. Anyone have any recommendations?

Chi-Chi, Raditz, Kale, Launch, Yajirobe, Beerus & Whis are my favorite characters. Go ahead make fun of me I don't care. Besides Vegeta and Broly of course.

I really don't like the pride troopers Jiren especially, the entire Ginyu Force, Krillin, Master Roshi, and Emperor Pilaf. But I really hate Jiren.

[Edit] For some reason DB Film 20 was flaired automatically and it won't let me change it.
