Anyone else remember the first DBZ episode they’ve ever watched?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 04:15 PM PST

Mine was right before school in 3rd or 4th grade (probably like 2000-2001)... the ep was when Gohan/ Krillin first touched down on Plant Namek and I could never forget it. I watched it all the way through from there, and then started over at Dragon Ball, which gave a different perspective.

At some point, the anime's visual quality eclipsed the mangas

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 10:00 PM PST

I used to hold toriyama's original manga in the highest regard. The anime could never compare. But I've come to realize, that the buu arc's art quality is actually quite bad. I had assumed i was just looking at bad scans for years, but I got my hands on an official print versions and realized that art really had fallen. The days of early z and late dragonball with every hair of master roshi's wonderful moustache being drawn were behind us.

But in comparison, I think the character designs for the buu arc are among the most memorable in dragonball. To this day its the style of choice for most fan art.

In particular, I think the best episode with regard to character design was the episode where vegeta blows up the stadium at the world tournament. both goku and vegeta's designs were flawless then.

    just something i thought about

Do you think that Dragon Ball should have a reboot?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 11:01 PM PST

Dragon Ball tried to reboot the whole series with Gohan, but Toriyama himself was either convinced to continue the story of Goku either by fans, Toei, or himself. I think it was more of Toriyama that chose to keep Goku into his story, since he was the face of the franchise and that the whole story started as him.

But this is where the problem persists, Goku's learned so well at this job that it feels pointless at this rate. He works better more as a "business" move when Super came out, but it's the wrong direction. Goku has no room for growth besides the gods, and there were moments of bringing Goku's childish actions and the humor from the original DB.

Should a reboot happen with a new set of characters or a soft reboot with several retcons?

The Frieza saga is the perfect saga (covers the entire original series)

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 02:34 PM PST

This honestly makes me apprehensive. The Frieza saga is so good, not just the scale of the threat that Frieza represents, but also the various themes throughout the story. Goku accepting the nature of his Saiyan heritage, thus allowing him to become a Super Saiyan, but also the pinnacle of Vegeta's story arc. I remember what the rest of the story is about so I know what to expect in the future. But this honestly feels like Vegeta's arc.

In the first arc, he gets introduced as a prideful warrior striving to be the best. He already has to contend with the fact that he serves Frieza, but then he gets beaten by Goku. The Namek arc is completely focussed on Vegeta's desire to get stronger and to prove that he outshines all other warriors, particularly Goku. Every time he reaches new heights he finds out how much he's still lacking, especially when faced with Frieza's strength. When Goku first appears with a massive increase in strength, it's once again an injury to Vegeta's pride, but it's a gap he still believes he can close. When in the fight with Frieza, he starts losing hope and feeling helpless for the first time, because he becomes aware of how big the difference is. When Goku still outranks him in strength it does the greatest damage to his pride. The rest of DBZ/Kai is focused on Vegeta's feeling of inferiority towards Goku which culminates in when he decides to become Majin Vegeta.

Not only that, the build-up to how big of a threat Frieza is, is perfect. The threat is introduced early, and despite Goku's increase in strength, Toriyama makes true to his promise. Frieza is like an unimaginable titan. This is what makes me apprehensive, however. The rest of the show has a problem with power scaling. After Frieza, you can't imagine anything stronger, but then you get the android and Cell saga, which just seem ridiculous. Not in terms of story, but in terms of power scaling. Frieza is already so immensely powerful, that imagining power behind that seems arbitrary. He's already blowing up planets. I'm not sure, but I'm afraid that this will make it feel as if there is less tension in the show going onwards.

why do people think goku was a bad father for being dead

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 10:04 PM PST

when a character sacrifices themselves that would be it but in dragon ball that's different case since the z-fighters always gather the dragon balls to revive people but in the end of the cell saga Goku didn't want to be revived why? because villians came after him for example Raditz, androids, saiyans, and mecha Frieza. and so for peace to be achieved he stayed dead but people say he was a bad father for not raising goten and dipping because he didn't revive himself to raise goten. well you got to think about this as if you were goku. you're family is always in danger because of you, you're son as a child faced many threats and you don't want to force you're child to be a fighter. if there were no dragoballs that would be a noble act but since he didn't get revived people say he did it on purpose but that was further from the truth because on the one day he goes to earth a villian appears.

A long time fan's opinion of this subreddit

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 02:21 PM PST

My absolute favorite part about this subreddit is the different spellings for Frieza/Freezer/Freeza that you can find in the wild. "Freezer" is probably my favorite though because, with his brother's name as it is, it makes for a cooler match.

    That's the whole post.

DBZ Kai is so good. The dialogue is almost poetic

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 08:32 AM PST

I think it's my favorite anime simply because of how freakin' good the dialogue is. Everything Frieza and Cell say is simply ear candy

Is Dragon Ball Super worth reading if I'm liking Dragon Ball?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 04:58 PM PST

I'm about halfway through reading Dragon Ball and I'm really loving it. I'm in my late 20s and never watched any Dragon Ball growing up. It feels like a Saturday morning cartoon. Really fun!

I've heard some, but not many, mixed opinions on DBS. I'm wondering if it has been a good continuation of Dragon Ball so far. Any and all opinions are welcome.

Some of my other favorite manga are One Punch Man, Vinland Saga, Berserk, Blade of the Immortal, Planetes, Pluto, and Monster... so, not shonen, but I'm really digging Dragon Ball so far. FMA Brotherhood is one of my favorite anime, though, of the few I've seen, so I guess there's that.

How do you watch Dragon Ball/Z/Super: JP or ENG

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 03:22 PM PST

I prefer listening to DB/Z/S in Japanese, but English sounds good. Just curious about how many people prefer listening to anime English or JP.
