Reviewing every DBZ movie until DBS: Super Hero comes out. DBZ: The World's Strongest

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 03:22 PM PST

Welcome to the 2nd chapter of our journey through the old DBZ movies, until Super Hero comes out. I only learned about the existence of this movie upon seeing the list of DBZ, since, as we will conclude here, it's neither good or bad enough, to be positively or negatively remembered.

    Synopsis

Doctor Cochin, an evil scientist, gathers the 7 Dragon Balls to revive his mentor Doctor Uiro, who had been frozen in a glacier for over 50 years. With this happening while Piccolo trained, he further investigates, finding Oolong and Gohan. Out of nowhere, Piccolo gets attacked by 4 Saibamen-like creatures, which he easily outclasses, before being no match for 3 additional evildoers, with Gohan and Oolong getting saved in the debris.

These 4 Saibamen arrive at Kame House and try to fight Master Roshi, who beats them comfortably, stating that he won't go meet Cochin. Nonetheless, both Roshi and Bulma see themselves forced to go.

Under the impression that Roshi is the strongest fighter in the world, he is made to face off against the three enemies that defeated Piccolo, leading to Bulma revealing Son Goku as the strongest in the world. The plan to give Uiro, currently only a brain, a body is revealed.

Uiro evaluates Goku against his three henchemen, which Goku beats due to clever strategy and technique, conducting Uiro to decide taking his body. With a possessed Piccolo on their side, the evildoers make him attack Goku, Gohan and Krillin. After Piccolo almost kills Gohan and Cochin keeps provoking him, Gohan has an outburst, breaking Piccolo's mind control.

Having seen enough, Uiro reveals himself as a fully fledged robot, instead of only a brain, attacking the group, and killing Cochin along the way. The Z warriors seem to be no match for the robot, but Goku's Kaioken technique manages to injure and knock Uiro to the stratosphere, after a Kamehameha. Uiro decides to destroy the planet instead, but a powerful Spirit Bomb by Goku puts a stop to his attack, taking Uiro's life in the process.

    Review

    The good

The very first scene, where Doctor Cochin summons Shenlong might be one of my favorite summonings of the dragon in the entire show, being very scenic, with the glaciers exploding during the mythical dragon's appearance. Additionally, just like in the previous movie, we get to see a villain using the Dragon Balls, which, despite happening back to back, still serves as a breath of fresh air from the anime, where only the Z warriors use the spheres (apart from the Pilaf Gang somehow de-ageing themselves off-screen somewhere during the Android Arc).

My second compliment to this movie is how well most of it hold up, especially compared to the first movie, in the scenery and character design department. I had to search if I was watching a remastered version as some of it, especially at the start, looked as if it was drawn recently, based on the start of Frieza arc character designs and style. The clean imagery, along with simple yet beautiful scenery and rounded shapes gives it that beautiful aesthetic, and it excels at it, in the most part.

Furthermore, while the fighting wasn't the greatest, but we'll get on to it in a second, Goku vs Misokatsun, with Goku using clever tactics to beat his elasticity, and Piccolo vs Goku stand out as good fight in this show, with the latter having an additional emotional weight of Piccolo turning on Gohan, despite the kid's efforts to help Piccolo turn good again.

Finally, and while it wasn't spectacular, the pacing was a major improvement over the last movie, with a clear 3 act story being shown, in just under an hour, which I consider the ideal time for movies in Dragon Ball. You can pinpoint the setup (Shenron summoning, Piccolo attacked, Roshi and Bulma abducted), the confrontation (Goku beats the doctor's minions, the plan is revealed, Piccolo turns evil and Dr. Uiro emerges as a robot killing Cuchin) and the resolution (Goku defeats Uiro with the Genkidama while he tries to destroy the planet from above).

    THE BAD

Starting off chronologically, while some of the humour is still pretty decent, a Gohan musical segment is absolutely unnecessary, and it undermines some of the tension that the start of the movie tried to create, while being overly long for what it was worth.

Moving on to the designs of the new characters, they weren't the best, in my opinion, but we can recognize that they were in line with what was portrayed in the show, so this one is, from all of my takes here, the most purely opinion based. I disliked how the robots that kidnap Bulma and Roshi are basically metal Saibamen, as that design had just very recently been exploited in the Saiyan arc. While the designs weren't awful, they were uninspiring.

In terms of the fights, they weren't the most diverse or well-choreographed fights, limiting themselves to majorly a couple hits and some ki blasts, with Piccolo vs Goku being an outlier of a decent-ish fight, while Goku vs Uiro was very unsatisfying. There were also some odd score choices in the movie, which I pretty much glance over, as they don't affect the movie negatively all that much.

Finally, the plot. It's not the most creative of plots, to be honest, but it proves to be a simple and effective formula to provide some entertainment, granted they don't drag it out for too long with talking and exposition, which im afraid they did. I would've liked more action scenes so that the plot didn't seem as stale as the movie began to be after the initial half.

    Ratings:

    Pacing 6/10

    Score 8/10

    Animation and Designs: 8/10

    Plot: 5/10

    Scenery: 7/10

    Enjoyement: 6.5/10

    Villain 5/10

    Villain designs 4/10

    Finale 7.5/10

    Final Rating: 6/10

TLDR: This film is a 6/10. While it can be entertaining, the plot grows stale as it goes on, and, despite good animation and designs, the poor designs of new characters, coupled with a generic story with small fights and an unintimidating main villain, the movie gets low positive score, for being enjoyable but probably not worth a frequent rewatch.

Do you need Dragon Ball XENOVERSE 1 if you want the full story for Dragon Ball XENOVERSE 2?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 02:04 PM PST

I was just wondering if you need Dragon Ball XENOVERSE 1 to have the full story for XENOVERSE 2. But I also heard that XENOVERSE 2 has XENOVERSE 1's Campaign as well as the XENOVERSE 2 Campaign, so do you need to buy both games or just Dragon Ball XENOVERSE 2?

New to the fandom, anything I need to know?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 12:37 PM PST

I got into dragon ball seriously like a month ago after years of largely ignoring it as some silly shonen show and I kinda wanna catch up since well super was the reason it dragged me in (I just like how over the top it gets sometimes, it's endearing)

I'm mainly asking for where to start so I don't make rookie errors and enrage everyone, mainly since since when I catch up on everything, I'll probably explore all the many what ifs I here, then write fanfic, the. OC's etc.

Looking forward to interact with you all.
