Rage boosts in DBZ and Why Super gets it wrong

    Posted: 03 May 2020 03:58 PM PDT

Rage boosts or friendship boosts were never actually that common in DBZ, characters would not become miraculously stronger just because they were angry or just because they wanted to protect their friends. Power for the most part was either earned through training or through 3rd party help( babidi power boost for Vegeta, elder Kai drawing out Gohans power, guru unlocking Krillins potential etc) the only character who ever actually got friendship or rage boosts in DBZ was Gohan but this is distinctly a character trait for Gohan who had a lot of hidden power but could never control it, in fact learning to control this power(and realizing that pacifism Is synonymous with protecting life as echoed by 16) was pretty much Gohans entire character arc for the first two sagas of DBZ. Gohan hidden power was also introduced as soon as Gohan the character was introduced into DBZ.

Goku going SSJ for the first time wasn't simply a friendship boost or at least not like how it is in super. SSJ was foreshadowed and built up, it's part of the established lore as an ability only saiyans have. Any Saiyan can accomplish it as long as they learn to harness their anger this is the very reason Vegeta was able to transform despite the reason for doing so being vastly different to Goku.

Every super saiyan transformation prior to the buu arc was actually tied to that characters specific internal struggle. For Vegeta it was about his pride and his refusal to accept Goku being more powerful. For Goku is was in response to the complete lack of regard for life displayed by Frieza(the antithesis of Goku) and how evil of that magnitude is something that enrages him to his core. For Gohan it was about his frustration with himself for his cowardly nature and his over dependence on others to protect him but also because he couldn't stand seeing others get hurt anymore where as in the past he was just powerless to prevent this

In Super literally everyone has gotten random rage or friendship boosts even when it isn't part of their established character. Goku got a rage boost vs black( Goku has literally never once got this in DBZ) Vegeta got a rage boost vs Beerus( Vegeta literally saw trunks die in DBZ and wasn't given a rage boost when attacking cell) Trunks got a rage and friendship boost( Trunks has never once shown the ability to have rage boosts in DBZ, in fact trunks in DBZ was a rather unimpressive fighter compared to the other saiyans. It makes zero sense that he would get a rage boost) and I even heard that Jiren was getting rage boosts in TOP arc.

Again super is completely misunderstanding the concept of rage boosts as shown in DBZ and is simply using them as a cheat code in order to give one character a massive power up so they can fight another character on even footing. This is the reason trunks killed merged zamasu, writers wanted trunks to have a cool moment to end the saga but instead of trying to make it believable they simply just gave him a friendship boost so he could deliver an attack more powerful than vegito blues Big Bang Kamehameha.

reason I bring this up is because I see a lot of people defending these decisions in super because apparently it happened in DBZ. But this is untrue, people didn't get random power ups for no reason in DBZ, the only thing that can even be considered as such is Goku going ssj but as I've already explained that's a flimsy argument. Besides this, nobody outside of Gohan has gotten a rage boost in the entirety of DBZ

Funimation and the fear of silence

    Posted: 03 May 2020 02:39 PM PDT

Since quarantine, I've been doing another rewatch of DBZ. My go to is the original Funimation dub with the Faulconer score. I'm not here to debate which dub is better, but I'm curious...why is there so much silence filled in for the original Funimation dub?

For example, there are so many scenes where thoughts and emotions can be conveyed through facial expressions, yet the original Funimation dub has lines said instead. I like to have the subtitles on and see the differences between original and the dub and there are so many instances where there's silence, but they felt the need to fill it in with something, whether it be dialogue, music, etc.

Is this due to western audiences? Is this an early anime in the west problem? Does anyone know if it's common in other anime that was brought to the west around this time? Do you think the silence works? Or do you think it works better when they add dialogue in? I'd love to get a discussion going.

Idea for new tournament based game

    Posted: 03 May 2020 02:05 PM PDT

Hi everyone I have an idea for the next game in this beloved series. While rewatching Dragonball I noticed how different the fights were with less flying/beams/transformations and more so martial arts techniques. Watching this I also realized how many great tournaments there were from the first WMA tournament to the TOP. With all the games we've received in the series I am surprised to see both a lack of Dragonball representation and a lack of focus on these tournaments. This is where my game will focus.

GAMEPLAY STYLE We've had many different styles of fighter and I think for this entry it would be best to switch it up with an arena style fighter similar to the Naruto games. This would help to de-emphasize the flying and differentiate it from the both the Budokai and Xenoverse styles. Fights would be 1 on 1 and have a focus on learning which techniques to use and when to use them almost like a more arcadey version of a UFC game. Leaving yourself open is risky just like in a real fight and learning how to adapt to your opponents moves and capitalise on their mistakes is the best path to victory. Instead of health bars there would be a Stamina type bar that decreases as you attack or take damage and slowly refills when you stop attacking. The less stamina in your bar the slower you move and the more impact your opponents strikes will have. There would also be an "evasion" meter similar to the stamina in Xenoverse which would help you get out of a sticky situation. Of course there would only be a fixed amount you can use and the refill for this would be quite slow. Also listed would be a special meter that fills as you fight and when full you get the opportunity to use a special move such as a kamehameha or wolf fang fist. Fights can be won by either ringing out your opponent or earning a KO.

FIGHTERS JOURNEY This would be the main mode of the game and operate similar to a sports fighting game (EX. EA UFC) career mode where you could pick or create a fighter and start from the first Budokai Tenkaichi tournament in DB with the same entrants and work your way through the tournaments as you power up and grow alongside the main series cast. As you progress you could pick different schools to train at where you would learn new moves and training attires to customize them. You would start with school options such as turtle hermit where you would train with Master Roshi to learn things like the Kamehameha and after image strike or the Crane School where you could learn things such as the Dodon Ray or volleyball fist. As you progress you get more options for schools, techniques to learn, and of course tournaments to enter. Like I said earlier the cast and entrants would progress and change alongside you so in the first tournament you would fight people like Kid Goku, Kid Krillin, Jackie Chun, Giren ex. And then later tournaments would have people like Adult Goku, Tien, Piccolo and Cyborg Tao. This would be a great way to show the increase in difficulty as each tournament would introduce new or stronger fighters with new moves to face. Eventually you could reach the more difficult ones like the Otherworld tourney from DBZ and the Universe 6 vs 7 tourney from DBS. Outside of tourneys I would like to include challenges with new fighters such as Baba's champions and Babidis space ship.

ROSTER Ideally I would like to include every fighter who participates in a tournament. So while Mainstays like Goku, yamcha and Krillin would be here you would also get interesting new ones like Pamput, King Champa and the Vampire Boxer. These characters could be used both for the main fighters journey mode and multiplayer modes. This would do alot to introduce new characters into these games and even put more of an emphasis on less represented ones like Master Roshi (or Jackie Chun).

CONCLUSION This is my first time making a long reddit post like this so if I made mistakes or poorly explained anything please let me know. And I`d love to hear your guys thoughts on this I have an interest in seeing new challengers in these games as the roster is almost always the same and dependant on super or gt for introducing new dlc characters. This also would be a way of moving through the growth of each character without directly showing the story as we've seen a thousand times already. But yea let me know what you guys think!

    Best serie ending?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 04:01 PM PDT

Which part of dragonball has the best ending?

    For me is:

SUPER: can be criticized a lot, but the last episode of super is great, from the ending of the jiren fight, to the conclusion of tournament of power and the lesson of zeno, to the comedy of bulla s party. The last scene, a goku vs vegeta classic pose with the promise to get stronger forever is an all time greatest moment.

GT: again, lots of complaint but a great ending to a great idea poorly executed (the shadow dragons). There is a last wish before the dragonballs disappear forever and goku has to give himself to the dragon. A great and definitive ending. Second place for me for focusing too much on goku alone and the goku jr vegeta jr bit, which is bad.

Cell saga ending: its not an ending but can very well be. Goku dies and stays dead. Vegeta stops fighting and stays with family. Gohan is the new protector of earth, trunks goes home and defeats the androids. Z went on but the huge timeskip helps to make this a finale of sort, that closes a theme, the rise of gohan and goku stepping back after his big namek moment, that went on from the start of dbz.

DbOnline: goku and vegeta go into space and create a supernova with their last fight dying togheter. Gohan writes a book on ki basically giving everyone powers. Sayan and majin genes seep into the human race empowering everybody. An ending full of amazing ideas but just written and never properly told in anime form.

Og dragonball: goku winning his first tournament, marrying chichi and sparing piccolo, its a great happy ending. A very standard one, with a general looming threat that went nowhere (piccolo promise to be back but does nothing for 4 years).

Dbz: unpopular opinion maybe but i could never stand end of z. Full of moronic ideas and stupid stuff. Goku leaving his family to train uub, random kid who AT BEST could reach buu s power and could never be a proper sparring to goku (not like vegeta can). Goten losing a tournament to a 4years old girl. Vegeta happy that goku leaves to train with uub. All out of character and not interesting nor thematically relevant. Hope that it gets retconned by super.
